Hi, I read your recent cover story "The Blind Hill" and was very intrigued by it. I wanted to know where I can get more information on this, possibly a website or something. I wasn't able to find anything online so far so I started to think that the article was fictional, since it gave no date or location of the accident. Either way, it was a beautiful story, and you guys made a good choice to put it on the cover. Please email me and let me know if the story was true and if it is, where I could learn more about this story. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
/s/Elly Davis
San Diego County

Editor’s Note: Yes, the story was true but if you’ll notice the copyright date, it happened 20+ years ago. Kent Ballard is unaware of any website detailing the incident, he doesn’t even known where Mike is anymore. It was a personal conversation between Mike and Kent that resulted in the story.

On the Escondido Ball Park

Kudos to The Paper for your article regarding the Escondido Ball Park. In tough economic times like this, prudent people pay attention to what is essential and needed, not pie in the sky. With all levels of government tightening their budgets and belts, to buy something that is not essential does not appear to be prudent. We have a wonderful city that businesses are coming to without being paid to come. It appears that Escondido City Government is a San Diego Wanna Be. We are not San Diego, thank God. That's why we live here, not there.

The finest compliment I can ever receive is a referral from my friends and clients.

Another View . . .

This is one I disagree on with you. I think the park will be a great boon to Escondido and to North county Also, it would get rid of an area desperately in need of redevelopment. I am at Lake Elsinore often for games and it's great. The residents there think so also.....

And Another . . .

If we still had the money that we ARE going to spend on the hotel, we would still have nearly half of the money Mr. Moorad and his group have asked us to put up for this project. IF it was a fifty-fifty partnership, let them put up the other half. That would be after we spent some time contemplating if this project is all that it is cracked up to be. I will NEVER support Escondido investing our tax dollars alone.

Has anyone noticed that the San Diego Padres are in first place? I say this because I believe for the first time in Major League history, a team in first place in the middle of a pennant race in September barely drew only 20,000 or so fans to a Sunday home game. Couple that with a Triple-A team with the worst record in the Pacific Coast League and I ask you, do you really expect to draw 7000 to 9000 at all of their games also? I say this sounds like a possible red flag. No one knows the future of sport franchises. Hey, the Clippers left San Diego. Rumors of the Chargers leaving. No sell out this past weekend. Whatever happened to Gulls?

All businesses come with risks involved. As a city we must minimize the risk, while maximizing the potential for jobs and growth in our community. The old saying "that the devil is in the details" holds true here. What is the risk to our city?

No matter where we put the ballpark "we will be dealing with these and other issues, (police, fire, etc.) in and around that park, adding to the costs". Also realistic expectations of development must be made to areas around the same area to estimate the benefits to the city.

And Yet Another . . .

I am in agreement with Nat Heard. Escondido is an aging city and, for much of it, it's not aging well. I applaud opportunities to clean up blighted areas and make them new, especially when they bring something of entertainment value that is different from the Center for the Arts. Escondido has suffered against neighbor San Marcos in obtaining businesses for our tax base and I think this will help. I am very familiar with the area under consideration and believe that it is sorely in need of re-development. I also believe it will pull from neighboring communities and will be able to provide sufficient parking for its attendees, something that neither the Padres ballpark or, even worse with no parking whatsoever, the Portland park. I support Dick Daniels' plan to have the Beavers come to Escondido.

I'm for it...I can see us doing concessions at games!

And Yet Another . . .

This might give me a reason, other than going shopping, to go to Escondido and be more affordable than going to San Diego to see a Padre game!

And More . . .

I have to agree with Nat and Mary. This town needs some outside help to make it go to the next level and this could be that help.

And a Different View . . .

When are we going to stop the welfare for the rich? If they want a new stadium, let THEM build it, isn’t that what being a business person is all about? This false idea that sports teams bring in millions in revenue is just that, false. Let the stadium go to San Marcos, its only a short drive. There are two vacant minor league stadiums in Tucson, AZ, that are available; why don’t they go there? Maybe is because that city couldn’t support a minor league team also. This would be a complete waste of taxpayer money.

Still More . . .

It is ludicrous the way the pros try to justify their pet projects with economics. They don't realize that it is a zero sums game. Every dime a local spends at the park is a dime he can't spend elswhere. Every dime a visiting fan spends in Escondido is offset by a dime spent in some other town by an Escondido fan visiting for a road game.

It's like the "economic" justification for the "Great North County Underwater Railroad" the Sprinter By my reconning for every passenger that pays the $3.50 fare, we taxpayer kick in $22. Now that story would win you a Pulitzer.

Likes Waldron for Council

I have known Marie Waldron as a long time small business owner in Escondido. She supports business expansion and new jobs for Escondido. Waldron encourages private investments to help spark redevelopment in Escondido. Waldron opposes taxes for Escondido and supports revitalizing neighborhoods in Escondido. Waldron is constantly working to fight gangs and crime in Escondido.

Vote for Marie Waldron in November for Escondido City Council.
