The Editor

Observations

One of the many things I enjoy about being an editor and publisher is that we get to meet and know so many absolutely fascinating people from all walks of life.

Many of them become close personal friends.

perfect example is Randy Taylor, the owner of Escondido Mattress. I met Randy about five years ago when he first became an advertising client of The Paper. As so often happens in this business, your clients wind up being your good friends. Our friendship has grown and grown ever since that first year we worked together. I got to know Randy well, and learned of his first wife’s great talent at painting. She would paint landscapes on most anything, including a great collection of giant sawblades. They are true works of art and while he might be persuaded to sell one or two of them, he’d be reluctant to do so because they represent a whole lot of happy memories. They are there for you to see and enjoy, however.

You don’t even have to buy a mattress to take a peek at some mighty fine Americana art.

If you have a need for a mattress, however, I can’t recommend Randy and his staff highly enough. I’ve watched him build mattresses; I’ve watched his long time associate Raul build mattresses . . . and I’ve watched Randy and his gal Friday, Laurie Hippert, chatting with both visitors and clients. They clearly enjoy people and do all they can to put you at ease, whether it’s chatting over a nice cup of coffee, or helping you select just the right mattress.

Randy, Laurie and Raul represent the “good old days.” That special time when you knew the folks who made your furniture, your mattresses, your special items that make life worth living.

I was a bit worried for awhile about Randy as he’s one of those workaholics. He loves his work and his clients so much that he’s there six days a week. Finally, he took a few days off and headed back to his boyhood home of Arkansas. His hometown of Sage, the surrounding communities of Melbourne and Batesville, all the family and friends turned out to welcome Randy back home and to help him celebrate his brother-in-law’s 92nd birthday! And he rested up. And visited. And he got out of the office and showroom, at least for a few days.

And it was good.

Randy is back now. So is Laurie. They are all recharged and ready to do business . . . ready to flash those warm, welcoming smiles.

They tell me they are beginning a marketing campaign which will focus on all natural Latex mattresses, double sided flip mattresses, which they have dubbed “the Lord of Mattresses.” Funny . . . I thought of Randy last week while Evelyn and I were attending a Kiwanis Convention in Reno, Nevada. I remember one night I just slept like a baby. The bed, more specifically, the mattress, was just dead solid perfect.

This is what it’s like with a mattress from Randy Taylor’s Mattress Factory,” I thought. I know for a fact he’s got “kids” coming back to buy mattresses who had mattresses originally bought from Randy by their parents. After all, Randy has been in business since 1954.

It’s no wonder. Good people, with a good product, and good service, just seem to stay in business for a long, long time. And that kinda sums up the kind of people Randy and Laurie and Raul are.

They are well worth knowing. You need a mattress? For the home? For an RV? For a boat? They’ll build it for you. Just want to meet some quality people? Drop in. They’ll buy you a cup of coffee and be glad to visit with you.

That’s the kind of people they are. They are special.
