Original Stage Presentation on Mental Illness to Benefit Bipolar Support Group

Hope Unlimited presents "Symphony of Bipolar," a rather original take on mental illness, onstage at 7pm on Friday, August 27, at Sunshine Brooks Theater, 217 North Coast Highway, Oceanside. This bipolar disorder themed production combines music, dance, song, and medical lecture, and touches subjects of mood through art, mood manifestations, thus making the audience learn, laugh, and cry. Ragtime Piano Concert set for Oceanside Theater

The Sunshine Brooks Theatre will present pianist Eric Marchese in an exciting evening of ragtime solo piano on Saturday night, August 28, at 8pm, at the theatre, 217 No. Coast Hwy., Oceanside. Marchese returns for the fifth consecutive year, and his performance is a fundraiser for the theater. He performs a variety of classic, folk, popular, Tin Pan Alley, and advanced rags as well as contemporary ragtime pieces. DAR Meeting Scheduled for Saturday, September 4

The Rancho Buena Vista Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), will meet Saturday, September 4, at 9am at the Shadowridge Country Club, 1980 Gateway Drive, Vista. The meeting will follow a continental breakfast, and the program, entitled "Quilting for Rebels and Yankees" will be presented by Cheryl Ranes.

DAR is open to any female age 18 or older who can prove lineal bloodline from someone who served in the Continental Army or gave aid to the cause of freedom in the American Revolution.

Palomar Model A Ford Club Announces September Meeting

Palomar MAFC VancoverWednesday, September 1, is the date for the regular meeting of the Palomar Model A Ford Club. The meeting will be held at the Palomar Estates East Clubhouse, 650 So. Rancho Santa Fe Rd., San Marcos. The doors open at 6:30pm and the meeting begins at 7pm. Upcoming tours and happenings of the Club will be discussed, then stay for goodies and socializing. Members of the Club just returned from Vancouver, Canada, after attending the MAFCA 2010 International Model A Convention. There were 300 Model A's attending. The Palomar Club group drove just under 3500 miles in 3 1/2 weeks, also taking in an Alaska cruise.

Senior Resource Fair to be Held at Silvergate Retirement Facility in San Marcos

The 3rd Annual Senior and Boomer Resource Fair, proudly sponsored by the Senior Specialists Networking Group (SSNG), will be held on Friday, September 17, from 1-4pm, at the Silvergate Assisted Living facility at 1550 Security Place, San Marcos.

The free, open to the public, fair will consist of booths from San Marcos Fire Dept., San Marcos Sheriffs' Dept., free medical screenings, community organizations, MediCare advocates, entertainment, games, giveaways from most vendors, and even a mini "antique roadshow" offering free appraisals. Seniors, and their entire family, are encouraged to participate in this event.

Square Dance Classes to Start Soon

The Wranglers Square Dance Club will open classes for firsttime dancers on Wednesdays, September 8 and 15, for those who want to learn basic square dance calls and enjoy the many mental and physical benefits of this type of dancing. Classes will be held from 7-9pm on Wednesdays at Rolling Hills Elementary School, 15255 Penasquitos Drive in Rancho Penasquitos. The first class is free; classes that follow are $32/person per 8-week session. Ages 17 and under is one-half price.

No experience is necessary. Attire is casual, and all ages 11 and up are welcome. Families, couples, singles, and groups of friends are invited to join the fun. Moonlight Golf Classic to Benefit the Arts

Golfers can enjoy a day at The Crossings, Carlsbad’s newest course, while supporting the arts at the first annual Moonlight Cultural Foundation Golf Classic on Friday, October 15. Also, golfers can save on the entry fee by signing up prior to September 15, while companies can get an enhanced sponsorship package if they make their commitment prior to August 31. Sponsor packages include visibility at the tournament and throughout the 2010-11 theater season.

The tournament will include a round of golf with cart, box lunch, awards dinner with silent auction, and entertainment by comedian Carlos Oscar.

The tournament, a team schamble format, will begin at 10am, Friday, October 15, with a putting contest, followed by the shotgun start at 12:30pm. The cost for individual golfers prior to September 15 is $175; $600 for a foursome. After September 15, the cost goes up to $200 for individuals, and $700 for foursomes. The Moonlight Cultural Foundation is the fundraising arm of Moonlight Stage Productions, which presents high-quality, Broadway-style musical theater productions each summer at Vista’s Moonlight Amphitheatre. Moonlight Stage Productions also performs several plays during its winter season at the restored 1940s-era Avo Playhouse.

Art Association to Hold 1st Annual Studio Tour

The Rancho Bernardo Art Association (RBAA) will be holding its first Annual Art Studio Tour on Saturday, September 25, from 10am to 4pm. Visit over 15 local award-winning artists in their home studios. Tickets are $10/person and include a brochure listing participating artists with a guided map to each location. RBAA will donate 10% of all ticket sales to FSH Society, Inc., a non-profit charity dedicated to research and education for a treatment or cure for FacioScapuloHumeral Muscular Dystrophy.

Jazz Band Concert is Tribute to Dorsey Brothers

On Sunday, September 19, the Coastal Cities Jazz Band, together with guest Bill Tole, will give a concert in tribute to and perform tunes of the Dorsey Brothers. The concert will include "Johnson Rag," "Getting Sentimental Over You," "JD's Boogie," and many more of their most requested tunes. Bill Tole is the musical director of the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and they perform throughout the country to soldout audiences. Vocalist Michael Ruhl will perform songs sung by Bob Eberly with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and Frank Sinatra with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.

The concert will start at 2pm, and will be held at the Carlsbad Community Church, corner of Jefferson and Pine, Carlsbad. Tickets are $15, and $12 for seniors and students. Fred Clark to Speak at Cymbidium Society Meeting

On Wednesday, September 15, at 7:00pm, the San Diego County Cymbidium Society will meet at the new location; the Ecke Building in the San Diego Botanic Garden (formerly Quail Gardens), 230 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024. The speaker will be Fred Clark who will discuss “Cycnodes, Mormodes, and Catasetums.” Fred’s passion is growing orchids, which he has done for 32 years, and he has hybridized new varieties for the past 24 years. Fred applies these skills at his nursery, Sunset Valley Orchids, located in San Diego, California. An orchid culture class will precede the meeting at 6:30pm, designed to help beginners and journeyman growers improve their orchid growing skills.
