Liberals Need to Put Their Money Where Their Mouth Is
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)

Last week, the Liberal politicians who run the Legislature stooped to a new low.

When the Legislature fails to pass a budget, vital services are suspended to Californians who need them the most, such as the sick, elderly and poor. For years, Republicans have attempted to pass a “continuous appropriations” measure during budget impasses to continue funding all of these services at the same rate they were funded the previous year.

While Liberals have never supported this idea, this year they proposed their own continuous appropriations legislation. However, instead of helping every Californian, they chose to continue providing paychecks only to public employee union members, while cutting off medical services and payments to everyone else.

I strongly oppose hand-picking who gets to receive government services based on who has the strongest union and the loudest voice. The Legislature must do all it can to make sure that every Californian who relies on the state for vital services can still receive them.

Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Juan Capistrano.

Democrats’ Tax Hikes Hit Middle-Class Pocketbooks
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick

A new report released this week showed that Californians’ personal incomes dropped by a shocking $40 billion dollars last year. This is the first decline in personal income in California since World War II.

The report said that with less money in their pockets, Californians have sharply reduced their retail spending. Yet Democrats are targeting the same middle-class Californians who have had their take-home pay cut with a whopping $8.7 billion dollar income tax increase.

The income tax increase they propose would cost a family making $60,000 an additional $473 dollars per year. And their proposed tripling of the car tax would cost this same family $118 dollars more.

Democrats falsely claim people’s taxes would actually decline under their plan because they’re going to reduce the sales tax. But the non-partisan Legislative Analyst disagrees, and said that every middle-class Californian making between $20,000 and $200,000 will be hit with a tax hike under the Democrats’ plan.

That’s why Republicans are standing up for middle-class taxpayers, working Californians, and small businesses in fighting these tax hikes. It’s time Democrats unite with Republicans to pass a responsible, no-tax budget as quickly as possible.
