Observations

Lots of folks stage golf tournaments. They’re fun, they bring together a lot of fun people and they can often act as successful fund raisers.

One golf tournament coming up soon goes golfers one better . . . not only will they enjoy great golf at the San Luis Rey Downs Golf Resort, but they will get to taste lots of good food prepared by the “Holy Smoke BBQ” team.

Yes, the big “Holy Smoker” will be there . . delivering up the tastiest BBQ you’ve ever had! Why, some folks claim this BBQ is almost . . . 'heavenly."

It’s all wrapped up in a nice neat little package by good friend, Carl Fielstra, who heads up the Green Oak Ranch Ministries Program.

This is their 1st Annual Golf Tournament and it’s scheduled for Friday, September 3rd, at the San Luis Rey Downs Golf Resort.

Things get underway at noon in a "Shotgun" format. Lunch and dinner are included in the foursome $350.00 package cost. T-Sponsorships are available for $500. The T-Sponsorship package includes a pre-paid foursome, lunch and dinner.

Folks can arrange a T-Sponsorship or reserve a place for a foursome by calling Green Oak Ranch (760) 727-0251, or by sending their payment to:

Green Oak Ranch
1237 Green Oak Road
Vista, CA 92081

Over and above the great golf tournament . . . I have seen the Green Oak Ranch and the work they have done. They help a lot of people recover from a difficult life and they do it very, very well. Carl Fielstra and his fantastic staff have taken on a difficult challenge . . . and they are winning! They have earned and deserve your ongoing support.

Well, just about the time I thought I had the Escondido political races figured out and had a fair idea of which candidates I was gonna endorse, Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler, who had announced she would not seek re-election for her Mayor’s seat . . . up and surprised all the political pundits and announced that, instead of retiring from the political arena, she will run for a Council seat instead of the Mayor’s seat.

Escondido is blessed with some outstanding candidates, both for the Mayor’s race as well as at the Council level. It’s a nice problem to have. You have a number of seasoned members as well as some fired up newcomers, anxious to solve the many problems facing the city.

While there are, and will be, philosophical differences between the candidates . . . they are all good people. Not a bad guy, or gal, in the group. Should be a great election season!

Looking at Vista, I can’t understand why Vista Councilman Frank Lopez doesn’t do the somewhat honorable thing and resign his office. He’s gotten caught with his fingers in the cookie jar, ample proof he does not pay his bills with checks that don’t bounce, including the paychecks of his loyal employees, it has been shown he and his wife lost a lot of money at the casinos, have not paid civil judgments against them and is in debt to both the state and feds for taxes associated with his business. Recently, he confirmed he had received a $25,000 loan from a developer for whom he had voted to support. He claims there was no connection. I believe he listed the Tooth Fairy as a corroborating witness.

Why anyone would want such a clearly irresponsible person sitting in a Councilmember’s chair defies belief. He should have enough sense to know that and step down. He has already become the laughing stock of the North County political world.

The electorate should not have to go to the time, trouble and expense of a recall election, though I suspect he would be recalled unanimously.

He should step down. The Paper calls on Councilman Frank Lopez to resign.

Prop BB Six Years Later

From its inception, we the People, the taxpaying property tax people were sold a "bill of goods" called Prop BB for a new hospital. The hospital is still not completed. Reason. Not enough money. So what does the PPH Board and the committee do? They raise our property taxes again to pay for their lack of economic judgment. Maybe if the hospital district hadn't taken so long to start the project, it would have cost less. Somewhere in Prop BB (unknown to most of us) was a clause allowing them to do this. Why was this clause not "highlighted" and in bold italics when the public voted on this measue? It is called "disclosure."

PPH has the money to continue with the project. They recently said they cannot "commingle" their profits with the bond monies. So instead, hardworking individuals and those of us retired on fixed incomes are supposed to instead "commingle" our savings and reserves to pay for this "folly"? PPH should "pony" up their cash reserves and get the job done.

Recent contacts with the S.D. County Taxpayer Association was of no help. They stated they "have no money" to pursue this. Even the agencies touted to assist taxpayers are hurting during this recession. What the PPH district did is wrong on two fronts. They sold us a project they couldn't complete at a price they wouldn't "fix." Does the word "bamboozled" hit home? This project "smelled" from its inception.

News from Milligan, NE.

Thanks for the copies of your paper. It was a popular idea and they are all gone. It was great meeting Dennis and Diane (Snyder, of Escondido) and all the rest of the families. This is a memory that will last forever. We estimated 200 at the highway at 1:00, almost 600 in the garden for the 3:00 program and about 500 stayed to eat. The families were impressed with what a small town can do.

Editor’s Note: This is a followup to our story of July 29th, “Where Heroes Once Flew.” Dennis and Diane Snyder of Escondido flew back to Milligan, Nebraska, for the memorial ceremonies honoring Diane’s uncle who died in WWII in a B24 bomber crash. The Paper donated 400 copies of the issue, to give out to townspeople and the museum. To read the story, go here: http://thecommunitypaper.com/archive/2010/07_29/index.php

Letters to the Editor are always welcome. We ask that they be kept to a 250 word minimum and always of a civil nature. Discuss and debate issues and philosophies, not personal attacks.

Why Dogs are Better Than Cats

"Good mornin' Punkin!" (Ignored)

"Good mornin' Farfle!" (Yawns)

"Good mornin' YumYum" (Ignored)

"Good mornin' SunnyBoy!" (Sound Asleep)

"Good mornin Trixie!" (Jumps up and down, runs to me, jumps up on my leg, begging to be picked up, wagging tail incessantly . . .

"Me! Me! Me! Love me! Hold me! Hold me! I love you so much! I want you to love me back! Right now! Hold me! I will kiss you! Lots! Let's play! Wanna watch me play with my Chewie Toy? Wanna see me chase my ball? Wanna see me chase those lazy cats? You're the most wunnerful person in the whole world! Did I tell you you're the most wunnerful person in the whole world. Oh, yeah, I did. Well, you're even better than that! Pick me up, will you please? Wait! Wait! Just look at these eyes of mine! See how longing they are? Those are for you to know how much I love you and want you to pick me up!"

And that . . . is the difference between dogs and . . . those other animals, called, I think, cats.
