Escondido's Gladys Chapman Celebrated 100th Birthday

On August 4, Escondido's own Gladys Chapman celebrated her 100th birthday, with a big birthday party for family and friends. Family members from around the country as well as some from Melbourne, Australia, came to San Diego last week to help Gladys Chapman celebrate her 100th birthday.

Today it may be somewhat ordinary turning 100 but what is extra-ordinary about Gladys is what she has done during those 100 years. Born in Australia before immigrating to California at the age of 7, Gladys has spent 95 of her 100 years providing service to others. She started at 5 years of age going door to door collecting money for the families of the soldiers of World War I. Since then, she has taken strangers into her home that needed temporary refuge. She has provided a safe and loving home to over 20 foster children. She volunteered in the classrooms of each of those children. At age 80 she volunteered at the Santee School District tutoring children that needed extra help in reading and math. At age 90 she received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Santee School District. At age 95 she was visiting residents of long term care facilities that otherwise would not have had visitors.
