Observations

From the Gripe Department:

Veterinarians who spay an animal and then, when the animal (cat) goes into heat, charges a second time to spay the cat. Seems to me if you pay for a service and it is not done properly, you should not have to pay to have it re-done properly.

Restaurants that don’t provide spoons with their table service; and who give you “whipped spread” instead of real butter. We pay for butter. We don’t want the unhealthy substitute. Restaurants who deliver “whipped spread” to my table just dropped down a couple notches in my estimation of them. Even if the food and other service is good, this is simply tacky and if a restaurant cares about its image . . . it ought to change this policy.

Movie theatres who sell “buttered popcorn” but don’t provide butter but more “butter tasting” chemical glop.

Movie theatres that charge you admission and then force you to endure commercials on the screen before the movie starts. Previews? Okay. Ads? Boo!

People who talk during tv programs. That program is on for a purpose. I want to watch it. Whether it’s football, news, commentary, documentary, “America’s Got Talent,” or whatever.

Commercials are for talking.

Speaking of tv . . . I’m getting bored with “American Idol,” and am beginning to lose interest in “America’s Got Talent.”

I may take up crocheting. Or skydiving.

Found San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond’s comments refreshingly honest: "We're not going to spend $45 million in taxpayer money to build somebody else's stadium," San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond said Wednesday. "If something good happens in Escondido, it's good for North County and good for the region."

Hizzoner pretty much reflects my viewpoint, except I don’t think Escondido should spend $45 million of the taxpayer’s money to build someone else’s stadium either.

Mayor Pro-Tem Dick Daniels will speak to this issue at the Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club meeting of August 17th, at 7am, Cocina del Charro Restaurant. I respect Dick Daniels a great deal, but we disagree on this issue. I look forward to hearing his thoughts. Perhaps he can persuade me to change my thinking.

New Stuff at the ol’ Weekly Newspaper

Beginning today, we are pleased to join Mack Hembree and his Gems ‘N Loans stores in North County (Escondido, Vista, Oceanside) in a promotion that will bring lots of pretty, shiny, jewelry, watches, and/or other goodies into the possession of one of our readers . . . every week. Value of the winning gift certificate every other week will be $250. It may be redeemed for any item in the Gems ‘N Loans inventory, at any of their three stores, for any amounts up to the value of the certificate . . . or it may be applied to acquiring any other item of inventory you please, thereby reducing the net cost to you of baubles, bangles or beads. No cash refunds for difference in price of item and certificate.

You have to be at least 18 years of age, a legal citizen or legal resident of the United States. No purchase is required to participate . . . an outline of what the promotion is, and how to get involved is located on page 11 of this here paper.

Final decision as to the winner for each week is me. Unless, of course, I’m overruled by Ms. Evelyn.

Finally, our compliments to Jack Campbell, that tireless and dedicated member of the community who always has such great ideas. It was Jack that came up with the Community Service Project this past Saturday at Grape Day Park in Escondido. See full story on page four of this issue. A class act by all!

Letters to the Editor

Lyle –

Your article, ‘Where Heroes Once Flew,’ is just WONDERFUL!

As you might guess, I read your story through tears.

I’m looking forward to delivering copies to the community of Milligan – with SPECIAL delivery to ‘The Milligan Committee.’

I’m sure the folks in Milligan will appreciate your article! I’m glad you included a picture of Shirley and ‘The Committee.’ I’m looking forward to meeting all of them in order to express my gratitude in person.

Great title! Great pictures! Great narrative!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the personalized delivery! I just finished reading the article…just called my Mother…and I’m heading to her home right now so she can enjoy every word this evening!

With MUCH gratitude!

Another Reunion!

Dear Lyle,

What a fantastic story on your website about the Milligan Memorial project and upcoming dedication. I plan on being there as I will be covering the event for a local newspaper, however, my first job in newspaper was as a reporter for the Orange Glen High School's newspaper, "The Musket."

To find that one of the families of a deceased pilot was from Escondido as well just reinforced the small world concept for me. I graduated from OGHS in 1986 and UCSD in 1990 and moved to Nebraska in 1991. I love it here and love the small town life. I live in Exeter, which is about 12 miles north of Milligan and our schools are combined.

Thank you for sharing the connection and giving us "the story."

From a Great Teacher

Lyle:

You have done a great job for our committee. I am sending the website to all in my address book. Thank you.

More Milligan Fans

Hi Lyle

What a marvelous article about the folks in Milligan Ne.

I lived with Ron Hromadka for 10 years in Omaha ... and we had many trips over to Milligan so he could see his parents, John and Maxine Hromadka. John was a brother of Milo Hromadka. John also was in WW2 and received a purple heart.

I knew Shirley and Richard Bronkow well as they were very good friends of Ron's and of John & Maxine.

I try to get to the nice little Milligan cemetery each year to visit Ron's grave and remember our good times ... always stop and see the Bronkows as well.

Back in the 80's John would raise 2 cows ... one for us and one for themselves. Never has had as good hamburger or steaks as we enjoyed then! ... took us a year to use it up from the locker where it was butchered and then stored in their freezers.

Again thanks for the article. They are a wonderful little community.

Loved the Del Mar Cover

Mr. Publisher. I'm not one to send letters. And I'm not a 'clique' fan who lock-steps and cheers everything. But, I know something special when I see it. When all the Big Honchos in the print media were running front page stories on Del Mar's horse racing, The Paper cleaned their collective clocks! The buzz around the water cooler and all around town, the way I hear it, is that The Paper went eyeball to eyeball with the best publications, and you had Your Finest Hour! Anyone who can't see what happened should be in a straitjacket. It was one of San Diego's biggest sports coverages of the year and you gave the readers what they wanted. I don't care much for horse racing and never have. But the story Fredrick Gomez wrote (July 15, 2010) fascinated me, made me chuckle, and then put a tear in my eye. All in one article! Mr. Lyle E. Davis, you may not say it, so I'll say it for you. At your best, The Paper can take on the mainstream media Big Boys and kick their royal behinds, seven ways to Kingdom Come. And you did. My opinion. So, take a bow, Mr. Davis.

Sincerely yours,

More on Milligan, Nebraska

Dear Mr. Davis,

Thank you for your article "Where Heroes Once Flew." My father, Sgt. James H. Bobbitt, was one of those killed on October 25, 1943. Shirley Brunkow forwarded your article to me which I've read several times. My father never knew about me as you mentioned. I was conceived on his last furlough two weeks before the crash.

I would appreciate a copy of The Paper that carried the story.

Please let me know what I need to do.

Ironically my cousin, my father's nephew, lives in Ramona and probably subscribes to your paper. He plans to attend the dedication August 14 in Nebraska.

Thank you and thanks again for a great article!

Editor’s Note: We’re proud to send a copy to a veteran hero’s son . . . with our compliments.
