Palomar Model A Ford Club Upcoming August Meeting The regular meeting of the Palomar Model A Ford Club will be on Wednesday, August 4, to discuss upcoming tours and happenings for the Club. The meeting will be held at the Palomar Estates East Clubhouse, 650 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, San Marcos. Doors open at 6:30pm; meeting begins at 7pm. There will be goodies and socializing. Some of the recent activities included a Model A day tour to Cal State San Marcos, Twin Peaks Park and surrounding area, finishing with a picnic lunch. There was a group drive to South Dakota for a Black Hills' tour, and some members drove their cars to Vancouver, Canada, to attend the Model A International Meet. "50 Over 50" Exhibit at Artists Gallery The Escondido Art Association (EAA) presents "50 Over 50," a juried exhibit of multi-media paintings by senior artists, at its Artists Gallery, 121 W. Grand Avenue, Escondido, from Wednesday, August 4 through Saturday, September 4. Acclaimed San Diego watercolor artist, Rise Parberry, will judge the show, and ribbon awards will be presented at 6pm during the Artists' Reception to be held at the Gallery from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday, August 14. The public is invited to attend the reception and enjoy complimentary refreshments. OASIS Offering "Staycation" Day in Balboa Park and the Midway OASIS Escondido is offering a wonderful “Staycation” Day in Balboa Park plus a tour of the Midway on Tues. August 17. The day will start off with a stop in Balboa Park where you can visit one of the free museums available. Then on to Harbor Drive for lunch on your own, either on the Midway at the Fantail Café or at one of the nearby restaurants. You can take a leisurely, self-guided audio tour of the USS Midway and see all the interesting things this amazing aircraft carrier has to offer. Superintendent of Schools to Speak at Democratic Club Meeting The August meeting of the Lake San Marcos Democratic Club will be held on Saturday, August 14, at 1pm (social at 12:30pm). The financial crisis brought on by the sub prime lending practices of the banks and derivatives trading on Wall Street has severely impacted the California State Budget and funding for the school system. Kevin Holt, Superintendent of San Marcos Unified School District, will address the progress at San Marcos schools, in spite of the financial challenges, and provide information about the proposed bond for augmenting school budgets. The meeting will be held at the Lake San Marcos Pavilion, 1105 La Bonita Dr., San Marcos. Escondido Democrats to Discuss Ballot Propositions The August 14 meeting of the Escondido Democratic Club will focus on the propositions facing voters on the November ballot. In an unusual arrangement, Democratic candidates for Escondido City Council will each present the pros and cons of several propositions. The meeting is scheduled from 10:30am to 12:30pm, Saturday, August 14, at the East Valley Community Center, 2245 E. Valley Pkwy., Escondido. Admission is free and open to everyone. Senior Transportation Program Funded for Another Year The Oceanside’s Senior Transportation Program (Solutions for Seniors on the Go) received funding for an additional year through the TransNet Senior Mini-Grant Program administered by SANDAG. This funding allows for the continuation and expansion of the three transportation programs currently servicing Oceanside seniors. The three options include: taxi scrip, senior shuttle, and volunteer drivers. Taxi Scrip is a curb-to-curb transportation program which costs the senior $7 for a ride booklet valued at $20. This program is intended for trips anywhere within the City of Oceanside as well as to the medical facilities along Vista Way and Thunder Drive and the Vista Transit Center. Shuttle Service is a door-to-door transportation service contracted with American Logistics, Inc. Seniors pay $5 per ride for any authorized destination to include any location within Oceanside as well as to Camp Pendleton Hospital, Scripps Encinitas, Kaiser Carlsbad, and any medical facility in the Tri-City area, and the Vista Transit Center. In addition, the shuttle services have been expanded this year to include, services on Saturdays and Sundays as well as services to Kaiser San Marcos and Palomar San Marcos. Volunteer Driver Service is a door-through-door service provided to seniors, free of charge, by volunteer drivers. The volunteer drivers will pick up the senior at their residence, drive them to their appointment, and return them to their residence. Volunteer drivers are needed and are reimbursed for their mileage. To be eligible for these services you must be an Oceanside resident and at least 65 years of age. Senior Service Council Announces Programs The Escondido Senior Service Council at 728 No. Broadway, Escondido, is offering the following programs. This one-day class is offered to those who have taken a two-day class within the last three years. Participants earn a certificate good for a three-year discount on car insurance. The cost is $12 for AARP members or $14 for non-members. Plan to arrive 15 minutes early for check-in and payment. Call 760.480.0611 to reserve. Sign up on Wednesday, August 25, from 9am to 12noon, for computer classes which will start on Tuesday, September 7. Classes on beginning and intermediate Windows 7, Vista, XP, and beginning iMac are for 1.5 hours per week for eight weeks. Cost is $25. Another email and Internet class is for four weeks, for $12. Dr. Sherry Nouraini to Speak at Business Women's Meeting On Thursday, August 5, the Soaring Eagles Chapter of the American Business Women's Association will meet at 5:45pm at the Escondido Country Club, 1800 Country Club Lane, Escondido. The speaker will be Dr. Sherry Nouraini who will speak on "The Motherhood Penalty: An Impetus for a Mompreneur Revolution. "Dr. Nouraini is a scientist by training and an entrepreneur by choice. She combined the problem-solving and analytical skills that she gained through her scientific training with her passion for improving the lives of working and stay-at-home moms to create Mom Business Associates (MBA). MBA is a business networking group with the goal of helping women become successful as both independent income earners and caregivers for their families. Softball Tournament Registration Underway It's time again to mark your calendar for the 3rd Annual Jacob's House Softball Tournament on Saturday, October 9, to be held at Patricia H. Birdsall Sports Park, 32380 Deer Hollow Way in Temecula. Last year's softball tournament raised $5,000 to support this worthy cause. There will be 16 teams competing for the coveted titles of 1st Place for competitive and recreational titles. Eight teams will be competitive and eight will be recreational teams. Players will receive t-shirts, and trophies will be awarded to the teams for the first and second place in each category. August 30th is the last day to register for the tournament. There is a $500 entry fee per team, which is tax deductible. Jacob's House will be a refuge by providing shelter, support, comfort, and inspiration to those in need for families who have loved ones who are going through traumatic medical crisis. This goal will be accomplished by constructing Jacob's House to provide support services for all hospitals in the valley. Jacob's House is currently in the process of acquiring the land, designing the conceptual drawings, and beginning the permit approval process with local agencies.
