The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club: A San Diego Institution
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)

As long as I’ve represented North County San Diego, I’ve taken pride in so many great and historic institutions in and around my district: Torrey Pines, Mission San Luis Ray and especially the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

Yesterday marked another celebrated Opening Day at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. From its first Opening Day in 1937 when Bing Crosby was there to greet the first guest, to the tradition it has become for San Diegans today, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club not only brings people together, it also serves as a strong economic machine. In the past, the racetrack’s 43-day season has brought the average North County coastal hotel occupancy rate to 87 percent, with 39% of Del Mar’s guests living outside the County.

As another Opening Day at the races goes by, I’m pleased that the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club has called our community “home” for the past 73 years, and hope that it will be around for 73 more.

Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Democrats Push to Raise Taxes at the Pump Instead of Cutting Spending
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick

California families are in the middle of their summer vacations. Yet many Californians are cutting back on their travel plans because of sky high gas prices.

Californians pay the highest gas prices in the country – at more than $3.11 per gallon. The national average price per gallon is less than $2.72. Californians also pay the highest taxes on gasoline in the country. We pay more than 63 cents per gallon in taxes to the government. These gas prices come directly out of the pockets of working Californians. In spite of this, Democrats at the State Capitol actually want you to pay even more at the pump.

They are counting on billions of dollars in new taxes on oil in order to close the state’s budget deficit. Instead of reducing out-of-control state spending, or ending waste, fraud and abuse, Democrats want to raise your gas taxes.

Californians shouldn’t have to spend their summer vacations sitting at home just because Democrats refuse to reduce spending and pass a responsible, no-tax budget.
