National Youth Nutrition Kick Off in Escondido

Dirt, worms, carrots, and kids - were just a few of the buzz words floating around the Boys & Girls Clubs, Lefty Mitchell Branch in Escondido, recently with help from the Amway Global Positive Sprouts project.  Seven clubs from around the US received a community garden to help educate youth about nutrition, organic gardening, and cooking from the garden.  As one of only seven cities, Escondido received a garden with the help of Amway global employees, Green Education Foundation representatives, and Boys & Girls Club members and volunteers.  According to research, one in three American children are overweight or obese.  Beyond planting the garden to help provide produce, Amway Global is launching an educational curriculum to further equip children to garden and learn about proper nutrition.

At the event, children and volunteers prepped the garden beds, mending the soil, planted seeds, watered, learned about and practiced organic gardening, visited garden stations where the Green Education Foundation provided planting tips, and more.  Amway Global will return this fall to harvest the garden, which will include a celebration with food and fun, then the children and their families will be given fresh fruits and veggies to take home for the holidays.

Girls Inc. Honored "100 Women Strong" at Luncheon

Girls, Inc. (Girls Incorporated of San Diego County) recently celebrated their first "100 Women Strong Benefit Awards Luncheon," of which yours truly was honored as one of the 100.  The Keynote speaker was author, Giovanna Pang Garcia, who interviewed 100 women and wrote an inspirational book called "Why Chinese Women Are Not Broke."  The book is based upon the lives of 100 other trailblazing Chinese American women and she shares their secret philosophies that can inspire any woman to succeed.  She was recently featured in San Diego Business Woman Magazine.  She immigrated from Hong Kong alone at the age of 16 without knowing how to speak a word of English.  With only $300 she began her own computer company and turned it into a multi-million dollar corporation.

The Mission of Girls, Inc. (Girls Incorporated of San Diego County) is to inspire all girls ages 6-18 to be Strong, Smart and Bold, through free and low-cost gender specific programs throughout the County and neighboring communities.  Formed in Vista in 1964, an affiliate of Girls Incorporated National, they partner with high schools, middle and elementary schools across the county.

Volunteers are always needed, for all types of work.  Contact Lori Butler, Executive Director, at 760.643.4067.  Check the web site at www.girlsincsd.org for more information about the organization and their Mission.

Banner Competition Winners Announced

Recently the Oceanside Arts Commission announced the winners of the 2010 Banner Competition, which was open to both professional and nonprofessional artists from San Diego County.  A total of 13 entries were submitted.

Best of Show ($500) was awarded to "Take Pride in Oceanside," Imelda Arroyo's banner promoting the importance of being environmentally conscious as a means of conserving the tranquil shores of Oceanside.  The banner depicted an Oceanside summer beach scene of a woman admiring the ocean, a beach ball with the word "Recycle" and its symbol as a graphic, a boy holding a surfboard waiting to use it in the water, and above them, a small airplane displaying a banner stating "Take Pride in Oceanside."  In the artist statement, Ms. Arroyo observed that she was greatly influenced in using rich colors and the iconic black-outlined style of paintings from the Art Nouveau period because of the banner's similar slim vertical dimensions.

Second Place and a $250 prize went to local artist, Joey Chavez, whose banner "Adriana Two" was inspired by fond memories of strolling on the Oceanside beach with his wife.  The Third Place prize of $100 was awarded to artist Cheryl Ehlers for "The Monarchs Return," a depiction of Monarch butterflies described as "a fun piece, loaded with color..."  Ms. Ehlers provides art instruction to 11 Oceanside Elementary Schools through her Stardust Arts program which was created from a Kenneth A. Picerne Foundation Grant.

The banners will hang on exhibit on Coast Highway from Wisconsin Avenue north towards downtown through October 1, and will be available for purchase thereafter by contacting the Arts Commission at ArtsCommission@ci.oceanside.ca.us or by calling 760.435.3898.  The public is encouraged to stroll along Coast Highway and view the banners.
