Humane Society Announces Million Dollar Match Campaign

A local resident and compassionate supporter of animals has offered an unprecedented pledge to the Escondido Humane Society (EHS) and the community it serves by matching every donation to EHS that is earmarked toward debt relief and growth, dollar for dollar, up to $1 million.

"This campaign has given us an unprecedented opportunity to invest in the future of our community's animals and the shelter that cares for them," said EHS Executive Director Sally Costello. "The Million Dollar Match campaign is our chance to own our home so we can share it with animals in need in the coming years. We know times are tough -- we see it in the faces of the dogs, cats and other companion animals who arrive at our doors each day, but we also know they have friends out there who care about them and who will do what they can to help. It's our hope that the Million Dollar Match campaign will encourage every friend of the animals to give what they can on the promise that it will be doubled. What a great return on investment."

To date, $250,000 has been raised and will be matched to $500,000; the goal is to raise another $250,000 by the end of July, and the full amount by December. A portion of the campaign will go toward paying off the $1.01 million loan on the EHS' East Valley Parkway facility that is due in July. If successful, the Million Dollar Match campaign will allow EHS to purchase the facility so it can have a permanent home to offer as a haven for the community's homeless animals.

Supporters can donate to the campaign on the web site, www.escondidohumanesociety.org mail a donation to 3450 E. Valley Parkway, Escondido, 92027, or visit the shelter in person. Details on the Match, including frequently asked questions and a video tour with San Diego 6 anchor Heather Myers, can be found on the EHS web site.

EHS protects 155,000 animals, and shelters more than 5,000 more each year.

Oceanside to Present Free July Music and Art Festival

The City of Oceanside’s Parks & Recreation Division and the Arts Commission will present a free July Music and Art Festival at Buddy Todd Park, 3000 Mesa Drive, on Saturday, July 10, from 12noon to 7pm. Arts Commissioner Phil Needleman says, “this event is meant to bring the community together to enjoy music and art in a natural setting, like the newly renovated Buddy Todd Park.”

This year marks the third consecutive year for the return of the popular “Summer Concerts in the Park” series. It is estimated that over 1500 residents enjoyed concerts provided in summer 2009. This year’s line-up has nearly doubled with acts spanning the musical genres. Attendance is expected to greatly increase as families are looking for more affordable, free, ways to recreate in this tough economy.

Food and beverages will be sold at the event. Dogs are welcome but MUST be leashed the entire event. Carpooling is encouraged, as parking is limited. Plan to arrive early to get a perfect spot, for a perfect day in the park. For more information, call Oceanside Parks & Rec. at 760.435.5041.
