Boys & Girls Club Director Speaks at Rotary
Matt Koumaras, Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Vista spoke and showed a slideshow to members of the Shadowridge Vista Rotary Club. He stated that nationally 89 percent of Club Alumni graduate from school. With a "no child turned away" policy, children from 6-18 years old learn character, leadership, education, and career development skills which help them achieve their full potential. GFWC Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC) recently initiated several new members. RB Chorale Presents $10,000 to Local High School Students
The RB Chorale presented scholarships at its May 2010 show, “America Sings” to Christopher Burgess (RB High) and Mastaneh Nikranesh (Patrick Henry High) with each receiving $2,500 toward college expenses. In addition, Ashley Twomey (Westview High) and Kyle Richter (Eastlake High) each received $1,500, and Alyssa Keene (Vista High) and Robert Turner (James Madison High) were awarded $1,000 each. Each competed to sell out audiences during the chorales spirited show, with awards based in part upon audience vote during intermission.
“This year we had a variety of performances” said Pat Bean, founder and director of the Chorale, “with a saxophonist, violinist, female vocalist, tuba player, male vocalist, and trumpet player.” All six high school seniors with be attending schools in the fall to pursue their interest in music.
The chorale will start rehearsals for the Holiday Show 2010 on September 14th at Westwood Elementary School at 17449 Matinal Road, San Diego, at 7:30pm. Weight Loss Group Meets Weekly
Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), a non-profit weight-loss support group, meets from 8:30am to 10an on Fridays at the clubhouse of Madrid Manor, 1401 El Norte Parkway (at Country Club Drive), San Marcos. The group offers encouragement, education, healthy living ideas, and other activities. Call 760.213.2501.
Escondido Senior Service Council Programs Available
These programs are sponsored by the Escondido Senior Service Council. The SSC is located at 728 No. Broadway, Escondido. Call 760.480.0611 to register for these programs as needed or for other information.
1. Legal and Notary assistance for wills, trusts, divorce, foreclosure, powers of attorney, Advance Health Care Directives, and more. Offered free, on Wednesdays from 9-11:30am to people with low and moderate incomes. Call to register.
2. Seniors could qualify for an additional credit toward their utility bill from SDG&E's HEAP program: information flier and applications available at the SSC office.
3. A job referral service is available for people 50 and older, from 9am to 12noon, Mondays through Thursdays. Anyone needing minor home repairs, gardening, housework, home care, pet sitting, companion care, or painting, call SSC for information. Fees are negotiated between the parties for the work to be done.
4. Free taxi vouchers for transportation for medical, dental, chiropractic, physical therapy, prescriptions, and eyeglass appointments. Vouchers are good for $7 each way and are available to seniors 60 and older who live in Escondido, have a gross annual income of less than $22,600, and who have no other means of transportation. A qualified applicant is entitled to three round trips each month. For the first set of vouchers, you must apply in person and bring proof of income. Apply from 9am to 12noon Mondays through Thursdays, at the SSC. Requests for subsequent months can be ordered by phone.
Library Bookmobile to Feature Surf and Skate Stories
Come for surfing and skateboarding stories, crafts, refreshments, and more at the Oceanside Public Library John Landes Park Bookmobile stop, 2855 Cedar Road, on Wednesday, June 30, at 3pm. The program will feature special guest, Todd Quinn, from the California Surf Museum. It's free and a program for all ages. Historic Photo Walk in
Downtown Oceanside
To see Oceanside as it was in the beginning, poster-size historic photographs depicting Oceanside's historical past can be viewed in the vacant storefront windows in the core downtown. This short walking tour takes approximately 45-60 minutes and begins in the lobby of the Wyndham Pier Resort, 333 North Myers Street. See the many faces of Oceanside's Pier and beaches and the "Top Gun" house when it was built in 1887. Pick up a flyer at the Wyndham, Regal Cinema lobby, MainStreet Oceanside, or the California Welcome Center.
This is a joint venture project by Oceanside's Economic & Community Development Department and the Oceanside Historical Society. Staff worked closely with local historian, John Daley, who was instrumental in selecting and reproducing the photographs. OASIS Day Trip to Hollywood Park Races
OASIS Escondido will be going to the races! The races at Hollywood Park, that is, on Thursday, July 15th. Historic Hollywood Park is having a Salute to Seniors and Veterans luncheon held in the Club House prior to the start of the afternoon park activities.
The Park began its life in 1938 under the chairmanship of Jack L. Warner (of the Warner Bros. Film corp.). It has had a varied career and was the first to use film to view race results. It was also used as a storage facility during WWII. The park underwent a major expansion and overhaul in 1972. This beautiful setting can be yours for an afternoon. The tour price of $72.00 includes lunch, transportation, coach refreshments, entrance fees and driver’s gratuity. Pick up is either Ed Brown Center, 18402 W.
