Student Film Festival Announced for San Marcos
San Marcos will be holding its second annual Student Film Festival at the Civic Center Plaza, 141 No. Twin Oaks Valley Road, on June 26, at 8pm. This event will showcase talented student filmmakers from all over North County, encompassing grade school, high school and college students, allowing budding filmmakers a venue to showcase their work. Viewing is free to the public. Submissions are being accepted online at www.SMFilmFest.com between now and Friday, June 18, for a nominal $5 submission fee.
Entries will be judged by a panel of Greg Evans (creator of the comic Luann and member of S.M. Arts Council); Dr. Meryl Goldberg (Professor of Visual and Performing Arts at CSUSM and Executive Director of "Center ARTES"); Dan Bennet (film critic for North County Times); Jacob Angelo and Nick Zynda (local filmmakers and programming directors for the S.M. Civic Center Screen). Certificates of Recognition will be given to the top films in the genres of comedy, drama, action/adventure, documentary, and art/conceptual, with cash prizes of $125, $100 and $75 awarded to the top three films.
Entries will be shown on the outdoor 30ft screen at the Civic Center Plaza. Mike McDonald, owner and developer of the center, endorses this event as an artistic community outlet. "We created the outside stage and large screen to bring visual and live events to the mini-urban park within the Civic Center Plaza. The Student Film Festival is a great way to provide a public venue for creative students to share their work with the broader public."
The previous festival had 15 entries, and organizers hope to double that number this year. Last year's winners were selected based upon execution and concept as well as professionalism, with the first three places in each grade category receiving trophies and cash prizes. Lia Bruce took first place in the high school category for her film, "Il Portiere." Jorge Marcial took first place for college for his film, "El Boleto Ganador." Judges Dr. Meryl Goldberg and Wayne Weiboldt each awarded a film with special recognition, Stephen Sprague's "Letters From Within" and Christian Motos' "Cancer Angel," respectively.
San Marcos is in a unique position to host this festival as it has two colleges with full fledged and award winning film, television and multimedia departments (Palomar and CSUSM). Additionally, the city is home to both High Tech High School and a High Tech Middle School which focus on multimedia and technology driven students, and borders Oceanside, home to Mira Costa College, as well as Escondido, which hosts a yearly "Escondido Youth Media Festival."
Roger Hedgecock to Speak at Republican Club Meeting

Over 10,000 enlisted rank military families have been matched with generous individuals and businesses in the listening audience where the military families received support for anything from baby clothes to plumbing, from car repairs to computers, etc.

Critter Camp Offers Kids a Walk on the Furry (and Scaly) Side
Parents looking for fun summer activities for their animal-loving kids should look no further than the Escondido Humane Society’s upcoming Critter Camp. The one week camp sessions, for children ages 6 to 12, will offer kids a walk on the furry and scaly side, as the Humane Society’s trained education staff will have many different animals for the children to see, hold, pet, play with, and feed. Past camps have offered wild animals such as monkeys, alligators, hedgehogs, and much more.
The camp will be held in two sessions at the Humane Society, 3450 E. Valley Parkway. The first session is from 10am to 12noon, the week of June 21-25; and the second session is 12:30-2:30pm, the week of July 12-16. Cost is $65 for one week, or $100 for both weeks.
