House of Origin: Lots of Paper, Few Results
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)

This week the Legislature is scrambling to meet yet another Bill Factory deadline: “The House of Origin.” One of several legislative deadlines, the House of Origin deadline requires lawmakers to vote on hundreds of bills a day, all of which stemmed from their particular house—thus the Senate will be churning out Senate bills to send over to the Assembly, and vice versa.

So while Rome is Burning in Sacramento, the Legislature is focusing on the “important” issues that face California, such as reducing the overcompensation of sugar-sweetened beverages and declaring the Chinook salmon as the “official state anadromous fish.” If you’re anything like me, you’ve got to be thinking, “Give me a break!” But most of these measures, sadly, will be approved by the liberals who control the Legislature.

It’s time we turn Sacramento around and focus on what is really important to Californians: creating jobs, balancing our budget and getting our economy back on track.

Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Legislative Democrats are Willing to Throw Taxpayers and Kids Under the Bus
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick

As the budget debate heats up this summer, Democrats are taking political prisoners in order to get their way. They’re willing to take working Californians hostage to protect government jobs and keep on spending.

Just this week, the former Assembly Democrat Majority Leader said he wants to delay the budget until kids go back to school in August. He wants to force middle-class families to call their legislators and ask “where’s my son’s [school] bus?” if Republicans won’t vote to raise taxes.

This is absolutely irresponsible. Californians don’t want to pay $6 billion dollars in higher taxes in these tough times. They want a balanced budget that protects their families’ priorities.

Democrats are so determined to protect government jobs and programs that they are willing to throw taxpayers under the bus.

They’re calling for a quote “complete closure of state government,” if Republicans don’t vote for a tax increase. Voters just last year rejected the same tax hikes that the Democrats are once again trying to force on working families. We won’t let them hold our kids hostage in their negotiations for tax increases. Republicans will continue to fight for a responsible, balanced budget – with no new taxes.

Assemblyman Martin Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista, and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
