Kiwanis and Lake San Marcos to Salute Heroes at Golf Tournament
Saturday, June 19, will be a big day in Lake San Marcos. The Kiwanis Club, the Country Club, and the Men's and Women's Golf Clubs are teaming up to "Salute Our Heroes" with a golf tournament in tribute to the Camp Pendleton-based Marine and Navy men and women. Military members will join club members and community volunteers for lunch and a relaxing day on the links. All the day's military participants and their spouses/guests will be joining the members, sponsors/supporters and guests for a fun evening of dinner, entertainment, presentations of prizes and awards to the Military personnel.
The day of festivities serves another purpose, that of the funds raised being used for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund (IMSFF). This fund is used to defray costs for families of the wounded Marines coming here from distant parts of the country, and to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of our heroes. Make checks payable to IMSFF, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
Other donations can include gift certificates for your product or service, or cash to be used to purchase gifts or sponsor a Marine and wife to dinner. Tee signs and banners appropriately recognize multiple levels of sponsorship. Make checks for these items payable to LSM Kiwanis Foundation (also a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. The levels include Hole Sponsors, $125; Bronze Star Sponsors, $500, on up to Medal of Honor Sponsor at $5,000; and Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin, $100.

"We The People" Free Constitution Seminar Scheduled
A "We The People" free Constitution Seminar will be held on Saturday, June 12, from 8:30am to 4pm, at the American Spirit Theater at Escondido Charter High School, 1868 East Valley Parkway, Escondido. It will be a study of the United States Constitution and Declaration of Independence, taught by Joseph Andrews from The Center for Teaching the Constitution (www.teachconstitution.org). The program will be appropriate from 5th graders to adults and will get "back to the basics" and renew understanding and appreciation for the documents that changed the world. The seminar is free, however, donations will be accepted to help defray Mr. Andrews' expenses.
This seminar will teach the basic principles of liberty using the actual texts of the original documents from the Founding Fathers, and equip attendees with essential knowledge to restore the Constitutional Republic and reclaim inalienable rights.
Reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The Theater will accommodate 400 people. Escondido Cougars Held Picnic/Reunion
The Class of '58, assisted by the Class of '59, held an Escondido High School 50 Plus Picnic Reunion recently at Grape Day Park in Escondido, and welcomed the Class of '60 as they celebrate their 50th Reunion. Co-chairs for the event were Hal Larsen ('58) and Joe Serrano ('58). Registrations and attendees included some from classes of 1922 to 1960, including 105-year young, Doris Heard.
Special presentations included performances by the EHS Jazz Band, and the 2010 Cheer Squad. Sharing special memories of the 'good ole days at Escondido High' with fellow alumni was the highlight of the event. Over 700 were in attendance for all or part of the event.
"Evening Song Choir" of Dallas/Ft. Worth Coming June 10-14
The public is invited to a free concert to be performed by the "Evening Song Choir," an interfaith choir from the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas, on Friday, June 11 at 7pm at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Vista Stake Center, 451 W. Bobier Dr., Vista. Then on Monday, June 14, at 7pm, at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, a Roman Catholic Diocese, located at 1945 Illion St., San Diego. The choir will be performing two songs at Sacrament Meeting for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Fallbrook 1st Ward on Sunday, June 13, at 10:20am, at 621 Stagecoach Lane, Fallbrook. A fireside, with audience participation study of the LDS Hymnal, will follow at 7pm that evening in the Vista Stake Center. There will be light refreshments served after the concert and fireside in Vista.
The concert is titled "An American Songbook, Songs of Faith, Hope and Homeland." Artistic Director David Featherstone, founding director of the Choir, puts together the works of several composers in an early spring series of uplifting spiritual and patriotic concert performances. The choir also will perform "For All Who Have Served" composed by Featherstone; a prayer that was written for all branches of the military service. He is an accomplished instrumentalist who graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington. Sunshine Brooks Theatre to Present Concert
As part of the Sunshine Brooks Music Series, they will present a Bradley Leighton & Soul Collective concert in Oceanside on Saturday, June 5, at 7:30pm, at the Theatre, 217 North Coast Highway. Escondido Democrats to Discuss Immigration Issues
The June 12 meeting of the Escondido Democratic Club will deal with immigration issues on the local and national level. Guest speaker is Andrea Guerrero, Field and Policy Director for the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties.

The meeting of the Lake San Marcos Democratic Club will take place on Saturday, June 12, with social at 12:30pm and program at 1pm. Escondido City Councilwoman Olga Diaz will be the guest speaker. She will share her interpretation of the results of the primaries and unfolding political landscape for November elections.

OASIS Day Trip to Visit Bowers Museum

Mission Indians to Hold Pow-Wow
On Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13, the San Luis Rey Mission Indian Foundation will sponsor the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians 14th Annual Inter-Tribal Pow-wow. This two day event shares with the community local tribal history and spiritual traditions of the Luiseno people. Hearing Loss Association Announces Meeting
The Hearing Loss Association (HLA) will meet on Saturday, June 12, at 10am in the Escondido Joslyn Senior Center auditorium, 210 Park Avenue. Local Author to Hold Book Signing
An Escondido author, Amber Winckler, is releasing her new book on the medical examiner and funeral service industry, and will hold a book signing from 1-3pm on Thursday, June 10, at Isabel's Cantina, 966 Felspar St., Pacific Beach, CA. This book, entitled "Into the Hands of Strangers" is the second book for Ms. Winckler regarding her experiences as a funeral director, embalmer, as well as the first female to be hired by the Medical Examiner in San Diego as an autopsy assistant. Oceanside Announces Several Programs
1. Movie in the Park at Dark - "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" will be shown on Friday, June 4, at the Beach Amphitheater at sundown. Bring blankets, snacks and friends to enjoy a great evening with the Oceanside Parks and Recreation. This is a family-friendly, free, and open to the public event. 2. Student Scholarships to be Awarded at Reception - Thirteen students from six different high schools will share $25,000 in scholarship funds as recipients of the 2010 City of Oceanside, Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Awards. The program is open to all high school seniors who live in the city of Oceanside. The students will be introduced at a garden reception on Friday, June 4, from 5-7pm, at the home of Stephen and Janet Lacy. The reception is the sole fundraising event for, and all funds raised go to, the scholarship program. Tickets are $35/person; and available at the door or by calling 760.722.1234. The City of Oceanside sponsors the program but no public funds are used. In the 19 years of this program, over $450,000 has been distributed to 200 students. 3. The Annual Filipino Cultural Celebration will take place at the Civic Center Plaza, on Saturday, June 12, from 10am to 4pm. The Filipino-American Cultural Association of North San Diego County, the Oceanside Public Library, and the Friends of the Library invite you to enjoy a festive day of music, dance, traditional food, and more at this event.
The theme, "Remembering Our Past Together," will kick-off at 10am, followed by a traditional costume show from the Philippine Islands. At noon, a talent showcase will feature local artists, followed by local dancers performing Filipino dances, then the beautiful and talented contestants competing in three pageants for the titles of Little Miss Fil-Am, Pre-Teen Fil-Am, and Mrs. Fil-Am. Escondido Chamber to Celebrate 100th Anniversary
The Escondido Chamber will celebrate their 100-year Anniversary at the annual Installation/Awards Dinner on Friday, June 11. Richard Hawk to Watercolor Demo at June Meeting of Art League
The Lake San Marcos Art League will feature Richard Hawk for their June 21st meeting, from 1:30-3:30pm, at the Pavillion in Lake San Marcos, 1105 La Bonita Drive. Richard is a designer, director, artist, illustrator, and instructor. Strong design with vigorous line and color creates the energy for which Rich's work is known. His work is influenced by Chinese brush painting, Japanese woodblock prints, and western traditions of figurative painting. His paintings are in numerous collections, have won many awards, and been exhibited by the National Watercolor Society.

Youth Summer Basketball Camp Scheduled in Vista
The City of Vista Recreation is offering a Youth Summer Basketball Camp at Brengle Terrace Recreation Center for boys and girls in 1-8 grades. It is a one-week basketball camp to improve skills on, and off, the court through drills, scrimmage games, and fundamental skill improvement. Players will build confidence, character and game readiness with Coach Lucien Hardy and his assistance staff.
