ABC: Anywhere but California
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)

The California Chamber of Commerce recently released its annual list of “job killer” bills, even further supporting the obvious: the liberals who control the Legislature are still trying to enact policies that will eradicate business in California. In fact, it’s an ongoing mantra of too many businesses to start expanding “ABC”“Anywhere but California”.

This year’s list includes 37 proposals, none of which are authored by Republicans, which would make it even more difficult for businesses to stay afloat. Some of the worst include government-run health care, increased worker’s compensation costs and a mandatory single sales factor apportionment method. Even worse, this same Legislature refused to pass my common-sense measure that would spur growth and create jobs, Senate Bill 1239. I hope that before it’s too late, the Legislature starts developing policies that will keep jobs in California, rather than destroying them.

Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Budget Must Fund Priorities, with No New Taxes
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick

This weekend marks 25 days until the Legislature must pass a budget and 40 days until the end of the Fiscal Year. Governor Schwarzenegger laid out the problem last week, and gave a blueprint for filling the $19.1 billion deficit – with no new taxes.

It’s about time that lawmakers acknowledge that we need to get state spending under control and tax increases off the table. The Governor’s budget focuses on state priorities:

It maintains funding for education and public safety, reduces the size and cost of the state workforce, and lowers funding for health and welfare programs that the state can’t afford. This budget provides solutions that are consistent with our state’s recession.

Democrats have 25 days to work with Republicans to get it passed. If they start over and add more taxes and more spending, there is no hope for an on-time budget by June 15. When Democrats are ready to get serious about passing a balanced, responsible budget with no new taxes we can come together and make it happen quickly.

Assemblyman Martin Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista, and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
