TechAmerica: CA is Number One in High-Tech Jobs and Wages
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)

Last week, the TechAmerica Foundation released their 13th annual Cyberstates report, which ranked California number one nationwide in high-tech employment and high-tech wages—many of these positions which are based right here in North County.

While I’m pleased to see that California today reigns supreme when it comes to high-tech employment and high-tech wages, I’m worried about tomorrow. Thanks to California’s extreme overregulation, lack of business-friendly policies and failure to join 47 other states in offering sales tax exemptions on manufacturing equipment, high-tech companies are fleeing California for better opportunities—and they’re taking their jobs and innovation with them. When compared to other states, California’s support of the technology industry has become virtually non-existent.

I hope this report serves as a serious warning to the Legislature: we must support the very industry that has continued creating jobs, giving Californians solid wages and making our state the innovation capitol of the nation. Not doing so would be detrimental.

Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Partnering to Keep Our Parks and Beaches Beautiful
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick

I recently received an invitation from California State Parks to participate in an Earth Day clean-up and restoration project at South Carlsbad State Beach. I partnered with a group of volunteers by trenching, fitting a drip irrigation system, and installing native plants and vegetation. This clean-up event was sponsored in part by grants from the Sempra Energy Foundation and The Home Depot Foundation.

Last weekend’s Carlsbad Beach Fest, sponsored by the American Chemistry Council, was another example of private partners and volunteers giving back to our State Parks. The event delivered an important message about each person’s role in preserving California’s beauty, and resulted in a fun day for families and cleaner beaches that we can all enjoy.

In an era of limited resources and multibillion-dollar budget deficits, volunteerism and public-private partnerships like these can go a long way toward helping our environment. San Diego beaches are among California's most cherished treasures. We can each play a role in preserving their beauty, and public-private partnerships that help support these efforts are especially important in these economic times.

Assemblyman Martin Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista, and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
