The Senator Reports April 22nd, 2010

Sen. Wyland

Tax Freedom Day – A Sad “Celebration”
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)

Last week on Tax Day, I was honored to speak at the Oceanside Tax Day Tea Party. These popular protests started last year on April 15th, when millions of Americans at over 800 protests countrywide gathered to express their outrage with government for its inability to control spending, failure to ensure accountability for taxpayer dollars and complete lack of auditing.

Californians all know what got our state into this mess: for years, the liberal dominated Legislature has spent every penny and then some, without ensuring improvements in our schools, our roads or our public safety. And thanks to their irresponsibility, California now finds itself $20 billion in debt.

I couldn’t agree more with the strong message being sent by the Tea Party Patriots and believe it’s the only way we can get California back on track. We must put an end to reckless government spending and truly hold government accountable to its people.

Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Sen. Garrick

2010 Woman of the Year
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick

While “Tax Day” is finally behind us, that doesn’t mean Democrats in the state Legislature are done trying to put more of your money into the government’s pockets. In spite of the fact that California has some of the highest taxes in the nation, Assembly and Senate Democrats are proposing over a dozen new taxes in 2010.

In order to maintain state spending, Democrats are pushing a $14 billion income tax hike on individuals and small businesses, and a $1.4 billion tax on oil produced in the state. They are also proposing trivial new taxes, like 25¢ per grocery store bag, or one cent per every teaspoon of sugar in your soda (about 10¢ per can). They’d like to tax you for every mile you drive, for parking at work, and $3 more per traffic ticket.

To recap, state Democrats want to increase taxes on you in your car, at work, leaving the grocery store, and for the soda you might drink through the day. Fortunately, Assembly Republicans are standing firm with taxpayers pushing for a balanced budget with no new taxes in 2010.

Assemblyman Martin Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista, and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
