Assistance League Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Thrift Shop
Outreach, an auxiliary of Assistance League of Inland North County, held a 25th birthday celebration for the League's Thrift Shop, originally opened in 1985. The shop had two prior locations before moving to the Assistance League's new building in March 2003. Known as the "Bargain Box," it was located on the first level and the name was changed in 2008 to the Assistance League Thrift Store. A meeting room, kitchen and "Operation School Bell" are located on the second floor.
The Thrift Store, located at 2068 E. Valley Parkway, Escondido, is the main fundraiser for the chapter's programs supporting families in North County. These include Operation School Bell, Hug-A-Bear, Ready...Set...Read!, Baby Real Deal, Operation Duffel Bags, Scholarships and Grants. For more information, visit www.assistanceleague.info.

Paws in the Park was a Big Win for Animals in Need
The recent "Paws in the Park" event of the Escondido Humane Society was a great success - the best ever. The beautiful weather and the best turnout on record with an estimated 1600 people and their canine companions joined in to raise funds and awareness for animals at the shelter who are awaiting a permanent home. More than $99,000 was raised, toward the goal of $100,000, and every dollar will help the Humane Society care for the 4,500 animals who are expected to come through their doors this year. People can still donate through the Humane Society's web site, www.escondidohumanesociety.org, or at www.firstgiving.com/ehs to help reach the $100,000 goal.
Carlsbad resident Madeline Beccari and her wirehaired Dachshund, Rocket, took home the first-place prize in the doggie wet T-shirt contest. The most talented pooch was a chocolate Labrador Retriever named Bear. His singing skills won him and his owner, Tommy Miller of Scripps Ranch, the top prize in the K-9's Got Talent show. Sweet Pea and Jesse repeated as the top fundraising team, followed by Team Low Rider. Top individual fundraisers were Betty Jamieson-Dunne, Wendy Wright and Candy Kalman.
