Liberty Tax, Escondido
Why They Are Special

Doug and Marutte Goodwin |
When Doug Goodwin was just starting out with his new Liberty Tax Franchise, he committed himself and his staff to being involved in the community.
One day, while Doug and a number of high school kids had completed building a float for the Escondido Jaycees Christmas Parade, a local CPA inquired why he was doing this because “there was no value in it.”
“He just didn’t get it,” says Goodwin. “We feel if you’re going to do business in a community, you support that community and its activities.”
That’s why you’ll see Liberty Tax Service sponsoring blood drives, BBQ’s for local charity fundraisers, helping out the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank and, out of $10,000 raised last year for San Diego County charities, Doug’s Liberty Tax Service at 2335 E. Valley Parkway raised $3600.
“We also hire local people,” he says. “We train them to become professional tax preparers. The course is free. We have hired five or six folks through Victory Outreach, trained them, some of them have, or will, go on to management positions. All they needed was a hand, some training, and a good, solid job. We gave that to them and now they are an integral part of our operation.”
Goodwin’s philosophy seems to be working. As he has supported the community, so the community has supported him. So much so that this year he opened a second location in Escondido at 1440 S. Escondido Blvd, Suite A.
A Marine who is a disabled vet, he still has managed to become a very successful businessman in civilian life with a variety of life and business experiences. Trained to work on F18 Avionics in the Marine Corps, he soon was assigned to the UAV (drone) program for the Corps. In civilian life, he went to work for Lockheed-Martin, got his pilot’s license, bought a Piper Cherokee and a Cessna 310. In October, 2003, he sold both planes in order to buy his present franchise. Today, he’s anxious to get back into the air and is thinking of buying another plane.
What does all this have to do with tax planning?
It’s pretty strong evidence that a man with drive and determination, with a sense of community, with a sense of helping out and training his fellow man, can be a pretty safe bet to be an outstanding steward of your finances.
He and his staff care about this, their community, and your community. They also care about your tax returns and want them to be prepared promptly and accurately.
So, when you drive by East Valley Parkway and see the Statue of Liberty Marketing Assistants waving at you, wave back, but then come on in and get acquainted. They are at 2335 E.
