Calligraphers Group to Meet on Friday

The San Diego Fellow Calligraphers next meeting will be at 7pm on Friday, March 5, at the San Diego Education Association Conference Room, 10393 San Diego Mission Road, Suite 100, San Diego. Beginners, professionals, and all levels in between are invited to attend and learn more about the craft.

Members Patt Miller and Sylver Kinsella will show their hand made greeting cards, and discuss tools, techniques and design inspirations. Treasures Abound at Humane Society Bazaar


The Escondido Humane Society is calling all treasure hunters to come out to its bazaar on Saturday, March 6, from 10am to 4pm, at 3450 E. Valley Parkway. Various vendors will be selling at the event, and a variety of items will be available for purchase, including books, crafts, clothes, jewelry, food and, of course, items for pets. Rain will cancel the event. The Adoption Center will be open from 10am to 5pm so shoppers can find a four-legged treasure to adopt.

Any individuals or teams who have registered for Paws in the Park, which will be held on March 28 at Kit Carson Park, are invited to host a booth at no cost to them to help raise money for their efforts. Hearing Loss Association Meeting Scheduled

The Escondido Hearing Loss Association (HLA) will meet from 10am to 12noon, on Saturday, March 13, in the Joslyn Senior Center Auditorium, 210 Park Avenue, Escondido.

Nanci Linke-Ellis, Southern California Coordinator of the Hearing Loss Association of California will be the speaker and discuss new media and methods to find others with hearing loss. She will be joined by the California State President Mary Clark. There will be light refreshments and a 50/50 drawing. Random Acts of Rotary

Members of the Vista Shadowridge Rotary joined forces with Vista Conservancy members recently for a morning cleanup of the entrance and Creek area of the former Sycamore Creek Trailer Park, off E. Vista Way. The 13-acre park is now owned by the City of Vista. Property and trail improvements are in the works, with funding from the City and the Vista Conservancy volunteer efforts.

Escondido Democrats to Feature Two City Council Members

The March 13 meeting of the Escondido Democratic Club will feature a discussion of the budget challenges facing Escondido, with comments from the two members of the City Council budget subcommittee, Olga Diaz and Dick Daniels.

Diaz and Daniels are charged with developing proposals for budget cuts to allow the city to balance its budget for the current fiscal year as well as prepare for the next difficult budget year. They will also discuss steps Escondido can take to change its sources of revenue in order to avoid income fluctuations caused by problems with the regional and national economy.

The meeting is scheduled from 10:30am to 12noon at the East Valley Community Center, 2245 E. Valley Pkwy, Escondido. Admission is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Free parking is available on site. For additional information, visit the EDC website,

Democratic Club to Hear About the Healthcare Issue

The March meeting of the Lake San Marcos Democratic Club will take place on Saturday, March 13, at 1:00pm (social time 12:30pm). Dave Roberts' talk will be "Who Stole Healthcare?" Mr. Roberts serves as Vice President of Government Relations of Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, HIMSS. He was previously with a Fortune 500 company; served as a professional staff member on the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and advisor on three U.S. Presidential campaigns. Dave currently serves on the Solana Beach City Council.

Youth Art Contest for "Green Oceanside"

On Saturday, March 13, from 11am to 4pm, the City of Oceanside invites the public to attend the City's environmental "Green Fair" at the Beach Amphitheater located at The Strand in downtown Oceanside, where students from Oceanside Unified School District will be given awards for the City's "Green Oceanside" Art Contest. Students from Oceanside schools, K-12th grades, were given the choice to enter either the Poster or Audio-Visual category for this contest. The art theme focuses on environmental awareness issues such as: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle; Water Conservation; and/or Clean Earth & Water (Pollution Prevention). The contest consists of four age groups by grade: K-2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and 9th-12th. The top three winners from each category and age group (and their classrooms) will be awarded at the Green Fair. Prizes include gift cards to local establishments, (green) school supplies, and award certificates.

Concert Scheduled to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day

The Millennia Consort, California's premier "organ plus" ensemble, will present a unique concert experience on Sunday, March 14, at 3:30pm in the Sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Escondido, 341 So. Kalmia St.. The concert will consist of Celtic music to celebrate the upcoming St. Patrick's Day. The ensemble, consisting of brass quintet, percussion and pipe organ, will be joined by Pipe Major Charles Rosenberger of the Cameron Highlanders Pipe Band.

Police Chief to Speak at Republican Club Meeting

Escondido's Police Chief, Jim Maher, will be the guest speaker for The Escondido Republican Club's (TERC) meeting on Monday, March 15th. He will be discussing the Escondido Police Department's current goals.

The meeting will be held at Cocina del Charro, 525 N. Quince, Escondido. Check-in begins at 11:30am, with the luncheon and meeting at 12noon. St. Patrick's Day Party Planned at the San Marcos Senior Center

The San Marcos Senior Center is planning their annual St. Patrick's Day Party on Wednesday, March 17, at the Senior Center. Corned Beef and Cabbage with all the trimmings will be served. The Carlsbad Choraleers are entertaining again this year. Reservations must be made the day before, by calling 760.744.5535, and if you need transportation, let them know. The suggested donation is $3 for those 60 and up, and a fee of $5 is collected from those under 60. Entertainment begins at 10:45am and lunch is served at 11:30am. Come early and be sure to wear your green.

Animal Communications Author to Speak at Library

Got pets? The Oceanside Public Library presents animal communications expert and author, Paula Brown, on Saturday, March 6, at 11am in the Civic Center Community Rooms. What is your furry friend expressing to you in its walk and talk? Brown will offer an introduction to animal communication and basic Feng Shui for animals, a concept popularized in her book Fur Shui. Ms. Brown's attraction and strong connection to nature and animals led her to a career path as an animal communicator, and she developed and authored Fur Shui as a result of her studies and interest.

Carol Le Beau to Speak at San Marcos-Vista Christian Women’s Luncheon


"Talk of the Town" is the theme of the San Marcos-Vista Christian Women's Club luncheon scheduled for Monday, March 15, at 11:30am at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive, San Marcos. The speaker will be Carol Le Beau from San Diego, a former news anchor for San Diego's ABC, Channel 10. She will share some tips on how to accomplish "Star Power."

A special feature will be a fashion show, "Dress for Success," featuring clothes by Jockey One, and presented by Marijane Relth.

Guests are welcome. The club has no membership or dues. All ladies are invited and encouraged to make reservations by Thursday, March 11, for the luncheon, which is sponsored by Stonecroft Ministries/Christian Women's Club. For information, go to www.stonecroft.org.

Assistance League to Hold Tea and Fashion Show

The Assistance League of Inland North County presents an "English Style Tea and Fashion Show" with fashions from Draper's and Damon's. The event will be on Tuesday, March 16, at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo, 12280 Greens East Road. Check in time will be from 3:30-4pm. Cost is $35/person. Candidate for Governor to Speak at RB Republican Women's Meeting

The Rancho Bernardo Republican Women, Federated, will meet on Friday, March 19, with social at 11am, lunch and the program at 12noon, at Stoneridge Country Club. Cost is $23/members and $25/non-members. Reservations, and cancellations, by 12noon on the 16th or you will be billed.

The speaker will be Larry Naritelli, Candidate for Governor of California. Larry is a lifelong Republican and a resident of Carlsbad. He is a Reagan conservative who believes in fiscal responsibility, limited government, and free market capitalism. He moved to California in 1979; has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration Management, ran his own video production company for nine years, and has worked in accounting and finance departments of major manufacturers in Southern California.

Jazz Band to Perform Tribute to Former Singers

The Coastal Cities Jazz Band will be performing a concert on Sunday, March 21, at the Carlsbad Community Church, at 2pm. Tickets are $15/person and $12/seniors and students. For advance tickets, call Gary Adcock at 858.775.1113.

From the late 1930's into the 50's, The Andrew Sisters were the first female vocal group to hit the top of the charts, and Bing Crosby was the all time favorite male vocalist with his biggest recording being "White Christmas." They recorded together on several occasions. Their music will be recreated by the Harmonettes and Michael Ruhl with their vocal renditions, accompanied by the Coastal Cities Jazz Band, under the direction of Gary Adcock, at this concert.

March Events Scheduled for Oceanside Senior Centers

A spring parking lot sale will be held at the Country Club Senior Center on Saturday, March 20, from 8:00am to 1:00pm. This event is a fundraiser for the Oceanside Senior Citizens Association Nutrition Program. Come early, a pancake breakfast will be served from 8:00 to 11:00am. Cost is $3. Come to buy or sell, or both! If you are interested in a space to sell your used goods, you can rent a 9’x16’ parking space for $10. There is no age limit to rent a space and spaces are on a first-come, first-served basis. Contact the Country Club Senior Center at 760.435.5250.

Rancho Bernardo Art Association Announces Schedule

Local artwork to be shown during March includes the following: Scott Palmer to show at the Pacific Trust Bank, 16536 Bernardo Center Drive, 9am to 6pm M-Th; 9-7 on F, and 9-4 on Saturdays. Janet Perkin's art will be at the Incredible Cafe', 11828 Rancho Bernardo Road, 6:30am through dinner every day. Bonnie Williams will be showing at the Rancho Bernardo Community Tennis Club, 18402 W. Bernardo Dr., next to Joslyn Senior Center, 7:30am to 10:30pm, M-F. And Amy Bekier will have her art at Poway Vision Care, 13035 Pomerado Road, Suite C, Poway.

Oceanside to Offer 2nd Citizen's Academy

The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and the City have again partnered to sponsor the Oceanside Citizens' Academy, a seven-month course for residents wishing to improve their understanding of the many opportunities and unique challenges the City faces. It is designed to develop residents' knowledge of the community and create networks of individuals who can help each other solve community challenges.

Goals of the Academy include: Bringing together citizens of Oceanside, from diverse segments of the community. To provide educational experience emphasizing critical social and community issues. To open a dialogue among citizens and business/government leaders. To develop a growing network of citizens whose contributions of knowledge, imagination and energy are directed toward enterprises that benefit the Oceanside community.

The Academy will be conducted from 6-8pm, starting Thursday, March 18, and continue for seven months on the third Thursday of each month, with a graduation date of September 16. Classes will be held at the Chamber of Commerce, 928 North Coast Hwy. Donations Made to Genealogy Libraries by DAR


The Rincon del Diablo Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently met with Ann Montgomery, Genealogy Librarian for the Carlsbad Library. She spoke about the library services and offered ideas on what to look for in tracing an ancestor line.

Chapter member Nancy Christensen presented a bound copy of her genealogy research book, "Haywood County, (TN) Connections" to Montgomery for the library at Carlsbad. She also gave a copy to Nancy Salisbury, a DAR member and genealogist at the Pioneer Room of the Escondido Library for their collection. She has donated a copy to the DAR Library in Washington, DC.

The March meeting will feature a program on the California Condor. Women who can trace their lineage to a patriot of the American Revolutionary War are invited to call for information to Phyllis Young at 760.744.7530 or Nancy Christensen at 760.788.8180.

New Members Welcomed by Contemporary Women

GFWC Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC), a local women's volunteer organization and social club, welcomed and initiated new members at its January meeting. Scholarship to be Given by League of Women Voters

The league of Women Voters of Escondido and Neighboring Communities is sponsoring a scholarship of $500 to a graduating senior from Escondido High School and San Marcos High School. The scholarship involves writing an essay of 500 words on the topic "Are Opportunities Equal for Women and Men in 2010?"

Rancho Bernardo Chorale Offers Music Scholarships

If you are a 2010 high school graduate planning on furthering your education in the musical arts, the RB Chorale has an opportunity for you. Any field of music is applicable, including voice, string, wind, percussion (no combos), or any other solo instrument. Applications are being accepted through April 10th, and those who qualify will audition in front of the Chorale Board and an esteemed panel of judges on April 24th.

In 2009 the chorale awarded a total of $9,000 to five talented local teens. In 2010 they intend to award four (4) to six (6) scholarships totaling up to $10,000 during the chorale’s musical production of “America Sings!” on May 21 and May 22 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Both shows will start at 7pm.
