American Legion Needs Your Votes
The American Legion's Operation Comfort Warriors (OCW) program is competing for a $250K grant to be awarded by Pepsi Cola, Inc. Votes are needed online; American Legion currently is third on the list of 729 charities competing for grants. The two top vote getters will receive the grants. Rules allow voters to vote for the Operation Comfort Warriors once a day through the month of February. Cast your votes at http://www.refresheverything.com/operationcomfortwarriors.
The Operation Comfort Warrior program is dedicated to meeting the needs of wounded military personnel at U.S. Military hospitals and warrior transition units by providing them with comfort items not usually supplied by the government, such as sweat suits, DVDs, puzzles, electronic devices, books, calling cards, and more. All administrative and marketing costs for OCW are paid for by The American Legion, meaning 100 percent of all donations and grants go to the troops. There are more than 14,000 American Legion Posts across the nation.
Philanthropic Educational Organization Honors Members
The Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) recently honored eight members at a luncheon of the Palomar Reciprocity Bureau. These ladies, each from one of the eight chapters in the Bureau, were recognized for "Continuing the Legacy" of the organization's seven founders 141 years ago. This group's goal is women helping women through scholarships, loans, and grants. Membership is by invitation. Concert Band Presents 27th Anniversary Concert
On Sunday, February 21, at 2pm, the Coastal Communities Concert Band (CCCBand) will present their 27th Anniversary Concert, featuring virtuoso trombonist Harry Watters. The concert will be held at the Carlsbad Community Church, corner Jefferson and Pine Streets, Carlsbad. Harry Watters serves with the U.S. Army Band in Washington, DC. He has performed and recorded with many distinguished artists, and appeared as featured soloist with bands and orchestras around the world.

Cymbidium Society
to Meet
At the Wednesday, February 17, meeting of the San Diego County Cymbidium Society, Loren Batchman will speak about orchid pests. A demonstration on how to prepare orchids for judging will be at the 6:30pm culture class, and the meeting will start at 7pm, at the Carlsbad Women's Club, 3320 Monroe Street, Carlsbad. Admission is free, and visitors are welcome. Loren and his wife, Nancy, own Casa de Las Orquideas, an orchid nursery in Solana Beach, and have been growing orchids there for over 35 years. Publisher Steve Frank to Speak at
Republican Club
Steve Frank, publisher of 'California Political News and Views' (capoliticalnews.com), will be the guest speaker for The Escondido Republican Club's (TERC) meeting on Monday, February 15th. His topic will be "The Great California Depression of 2010."

Premiere of Neil Sedaka Musical Opens this Week in Vista!
Vista’s Broadway Theater kicks off its 6th Season on Thursday, February 11, with a San Diego Premiere of a new Neil Sedaka Musical, "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do." Since opening its doors in June of 2004, the Broadway Theater has made it a point of debuting no less than two new works every year.
'Breaking Up Is Hard To Do' is such a fun show," states director and theater owner Randall Hickman, “It’s set in the late 60’s and features some outrageous costumes, bigger than life characters and over a dozen Neil Sedaka hits woven together to move the plot along.” Some of Sedaka’s hits featured are "Where The Boys Are," "Calendar Girl," "Happy Birthday Sweet 16," "Laughter in the Rain," "Love Will Keep Us Together," and many more. It's a ‘feel good’ show that features amazing songs and unforgettable characters, and played for several years in Branson, Missouri. It plays tonight, February 11 through March 7th. Get Involved With Youth Indoor Soccer
The City of Vista is holding registrations for the Youth Indoor Soccer program for boys and girls in grades 1-8. The program combines instruction and games to accommodate boys and girls of all abilities, in a fast-moving and exciting indoor soccer program. Head Coach Carlos Hernandez teaches children the game of soccer, how to kick, shoot, and score, improve their skills, make new friends, and most of all, have fun. Walk-in registration began on Monday, February 8, at Brengle Terrace Rec Center. Fees are $68 for Vista residents, and $81 for non-residents. Volunteer coaching opportunities are available. Have a Heart for Homeless Animals this Valentine's Day
All Escondido Humane Society pets can be adopted for $14 off the regular fees on Saturday and Sunday, February 13th and 14th. Valentine’s Day is a holiday honoring love, but this February 14, hundreds of homeless animals at the Escondido Humane Society will be spending the day without a special someone. To banish the lonely hearts, yours and the animals, you can adopt from the 42 dogs, 50 cats, one horse, 38 bunnies, and one mouse currently available for adoption at EHS.
Regular adoption fees are $160 for puppies and kittens up to 6 months; $110 for adult dogs and cats (6 months to 7 years); $55 for senior dogs and cats (7 years and up); and $45 for all ages of rabbits. All adoption fees include spay/neuter; microchip; up-to-date vaccinations; dog licensing (Escondido, San Marcos, and Poway areas only); wellness exam after adoption; bag of food; discounts at local pet supply; grooming and boarding partners; and behavior support for dogs and cats for the lifetime of the animal.

Tom Tiedeman to Give Art Demo
The Lake San Marcos Art League will meet on Monday, February 15, at the Lake Pavillion, 1105 La Bonita Drive, Lake San Marcos, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Noted artist, Tom Tiedeman, will give a demonstration in watercolor. His use of color is captivating, and he does not limit himself to one subject; he paints versatile subject matter from free flower impressions to realistic landscapes to architectural renderings. Auditions Announced for Romeo and Juliet

The New Vision Theatre Company in Oceanside is holding auditions for "Faith County II: An Evening of Culture," a comedy play, on Saturday, February 13 at 1pm, and Monday, February 15, at 6:30pm, at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre, 217 North Coast Hwy., Oceanside. The performances will take place on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from April 2 to April 18. All roles are open for a cast of eight, from ages 20's to 50's; cold read from script. New Oceanside Beach Cruiser Program to Open
On Monday, February 15, the Oceanside Beach Cruiser program will open. Formerly known as the Dasani Blue Bike Program, Beach Cruisers may now be rented Monday through Friday for $5/day. A state I.D. Card and/or Driver's License, a credit card and a working cell phone are required to rent the bikes. Helmets are required for ages 13-18 years of age. To rent a bike, go to the Parks & Recreation office at 300 North Coast Highway. The program is not available on weekends or City observed holidays. City Hall is closed on alternating Fridays. Children's Hospital Women's Auxiliary is Looking for New Members
The North County Women's Auxiliary of Rady Children's Hospital extends an invitation to join their group of women from all over North County and outlying areas. They are looking for new members who are willing to donate time and talents to help raise funds for Rady Children's Hospital that benefits children throughout San Diego County. Senator Hollingsworth to Speak at Republican Women's Meeting
On Friday, February 19, starting with social at 11am and lunch/program at 12noon, the Rancho Bernardo Republican Women's meeting will be held at the Stoneridge Country Club in Poway. State Senator from the 36th District, Dennis Hollingsworth will be the speaker. In addition, the club will recognize the three presidents born this month: Washington, Lincoln and Reagan. Oceanside Presents Music Series at Sunshine Brooks Theatre
On Wednesday, February 24, at 7pm, the Sunshine Brooks Theatre, a non-profit community theatre of Oceanside, will host an evening of original songs from San Diego county artists. In addition, the Council offers a job referral service for people older than 50, from 9am to noon, Mondays through Thursdays. Landscaper Greg Rubin to Speak at Audubon General Meeting
On Wednesday, February 17, at 7pm, the Buena Vista Audubon Society will present Greg Rubin who will speak on "The Secrets of Landscaping with California Native Plants." OASIS Class in Vista on Conducting Meetings Properly
The McClellan Senior Center in Vista will host an OASIS class on how to "Speak Up When Conducting Your Meetings Properly." The class will be on Thursday, February 18, from 1 to 2:30pm, at the Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Participants will learn the history of Parliamentary Procedures, why it helps to have democratically run meetings, and how to do so. The speaker for this workshop is a member of the National Association of Parliamentarians. Copies of Robert's Rules of Order will be available for sale, at costs of $3 up to $20, depending on level of participation individuals need. Lorraine Boyce to Speak at AAUW Meeting
When the Escondido-San Marcos Branch of the American Association of University Women, (AAUW), meets on Saturday, February 20, Lorraine Boyce will be the speaker. Lorraine is a former Escondido Mayor, a long-time member of AAUW, and among her many achievements successfully got funding to start the Escondido Community Child Development Center (ECCDC), and was instrumental in getting funding for the I-15 Freeway through Escondido.

Oceanside Library Opens Music Series
The Oceanside Public Library and Friends of the Library are proud to open the Spring World Music Series with the "Fishtank Ensemble." This concert will be on Saturday, February 20, in the Civic Center Library Community Rooms, 330 No. Coast Highway, starting at 7:30pm. Free parking is available in the Civic Center garage. Tickets are $15 and are available at the check-out desks at the Civic Center and Mission libraries. Doors open at 7pm, and it is open seating.
The LA Weekly calls this group "cross pollinated gypsy music...one of the most thrilling young acts on the planet." Formed in 2005, the group has been playing everywhere from hippest LA clubs to cultural centers and museums. The ensemble includes two violins, bass player, musical saw, guitar, opera, jazz and gypsy vocals, an accordion and one little banjolele. Fine Arts Festival at Woman's Club
The annual Fine Arts Festival of the Palomar District of Women's Clubs will be held beginning at 9am Tuesday, February 23, at the Woman's Club of Escondido Clubhouse, 751 No. Rose, (corner Rose and Mission Ave.). Paintings, photography, creative writing, and sewing items will be on display along with the judging results.

Mainly Mozart Free Concert - "Nostalgic Journey"
Mainly Mozart is offering a free "Nostalgic Journey" concert on Monday, February 22, from 10:30am to 11:15am, at the Country Club Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane. The featured performers are Kate Hatmaker and Ines Irawati. This event is made possible by County Supervisor Bill Horn and the County of San Diego.
