Escondido Senior Center Inundated with
Gift Baskets
Despite furloughs and pay cuts, Escondido city employees responded in a big way to the Escondido Joslyn Senior Center's request for holiday gift baskets for needy senior citizens. Amy Shipley, Joslyn Senior Center Manager, had hoped to receive approximately 20 baskets, or roughly one gift basket from each city department. Instead, city employees and the Fire Department Senior Volunteers inundated the center with over 300 gift baskets and food bags that included non-perishable food items, hats, gloves, books, decorative paper and ribbons.
Santa (aka Abraham Renteria) and his elves (Brian Mitchell and Karen Williams) with Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler were on hand to distribute gift baskets to low-income seniors that participate in the Joslyn Senior Center's nutrition program. Food baskets and bags also will be distributed to low-income seniors through programs such as Heritage Clinic of Escondido, the Senior Service Council of Escondido's Taxi voucher program, and the Escondido Care Center.

DAR Chapter Gives Gifts to Wives of
Deployed Military
The Rincon del Diablo Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) joined with members of the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis for a holiday party for the wives and children of the Marine 1st Anglico at Camp Pendleton. Half of the all male 1st Anglico have already been deployed to Afghanistan; the other half is to be deployed after the holidays. The Kiwanis club provided the toys for the children while DAR members provided gift bags for the women; each bag contained spa quality cosmetics, a beaded bracelet, earrings, and a sachet made by members, a hand crocheted ornament and a holiday card hand signed by the members, topped with a live red rose. This is just one of DAR's projects. The group meets monthly at the Escondido Country Club for lunch and a history or patriotic program. Women who can prove lineage back to a patriot of the American Revolutionary War are invited to join. Members will assist in preparing the genealogy. For information, call Phyllis Young, 760.744.7530, or Nancy Christensen at 760.788.8180.

At his birthday party, Creed uniquely and selflessly requested that his friends not bring gifts for him but bring a new ball as a donation for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside. Creed's mother says "I feel it's a gift to our children for them to learn compassion, generosity and gratitude through collecting gifts on their special day. We have been fortunate in our lives and want to recognize others and give back when possible." Creed and his family hand delivered three brimming bags full of bouncey balls, wiffle balls, footballs and baseballs to the thankful boys and girls at the Club.
