Thanks to Past Overspending, California’s Facing a Deficit Yet Again
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)
The nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office (LAO) that provides fiscal analysis for the Legislature recently released their fiscal forecast for California’s future. Unfortunately, once again, the news is dim and dismal: over the next 19 months, California is predicted to face a $21 billion deficit.
After this turbulent year of raising taxes, working late into early mornings and passing multiple bogus budgets, we still have nothing but more debt. Unfortunately, there is little we can do to change the previous years of overspending that got us here. That’s what happens when you spend every penny in strong economic years and leave nothing for the tough ones—you fall deep into debt.
Come January, I look forward to working with both sides of the aisle to rein in spending and develop permanent solutions to the fiscal nightmare that California has faced for too long. It’s time for the Legislature to wake up and develop some serious reforms.
Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
