Verdict’s In: Regulation Drives Jobs Away
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)
Last week the Senate Labor Committee held an informational hearing: “Putting California Back to Work.” Employers from around the state discussed burdensome regulations and their overall negative affects.
One of the panelists testified that his business was regulated by 67 different agencies! Another shared a study that said if California’s business standards were the same as they were in 2000, we’d have 1.6 million more jobs today. The National Federation of Independent Business noted that regulation is the cause of significant cost to small business, as they are hampered with mounds of paperwork and compliance troubles themselves, taking time away from business productivity and growth—and ultimately creating the jobs that Californians need.
The verdict was clear: regulation is a huge roadblock for business and job growth in California. The Legislature must start focusing on delving into this serious issue, so we can fight California’s 12.5% unemployment rate and bring jobs back to our state.
Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Thanksgiving
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick
As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week, we are reminded of the many blessings we enjoy. We give thanks for being able to join family and friends. We give thanks for the liberty we benefit from as Californians and Americans. And we give thanks to all those who keep us safe and free.
But beyond the tasty dinners and football games, Thanksgiving is also about helping people in our communities. These tough economic times, find both families and charitable organizations on the edge and stretched to the limit. We have an opportunity to brighten the lives of our neighbors and ease the challenges they face. It is important that all of us, who are fortunate, do what we can to help those in need this season.
There are many opportunities to help out those in need throughout our community. For example, organizations such as the Angel’s Depot, Circle of Friends, Casa de Amparo, Pregnancy Resource Center, Interfaith Community Services, Women’s Resource Center, and Phoenix House are all in need of your support at this time of year. I encourage you to contact these organizations to learn more about the services they provide and their specific needs.
Assemblyman Martin Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista, and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
