Daughters of the American Revolution Salutes Wounded Warriors, Corpsmen/Medics and their Support Staff

The De Anza and Rancho Buena Vista Chapters, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held a joint meeting recently to salute military personnel. Over thirty military men and women, representing the Army, Navy, and Marines, were honored for their service, dedication, and sacrifice to our country.
Fallbrook sculptor, Jim Helms, exhibited and explained his representational art entitled, “Wounded Warrior.” Using material from the Rice Canyon fire of 2007, this sculpture expresses the courage, strength and the rebirth of a soldier in contemporary form, and served as the theme as the two chapters recognized each military guest and thanked them for their service.

Support staff honorees related their involvement in the treatment and rehabilitation of wounded warriors. The wounded warriors then shared their experiences and feelings for having served our country. DAR is open to any female age 18 or older that can prove direct lineage to an ancestor who assisted in America’s fight for independence in the Revolutionary War. For information on membership in the DAR, contact Joanne Murphy, Regent of De Anza Chapter, at 760.481.4434, or Jeanette Shiel, Regent of Rancho Buena Vista Chapter, at 760.215.9142.

Avoid the Crowds on Black Friday; Adopt a Pet Instead

Black Friday is the busiest shopping day of the year. The Escondido Humane Society is asking everyone to skip the lines and take advantage of the Black Friday deals at the shelter. The special is being extended through the weekend of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, November 27-29, when anyone can adopt a pet that has black in its coat for half-off its regular adoption fee. Even if it just has a black spot, not a full black coat, it will be included in the special. The hope is that black pets, who traditionally have a more difficult time getting adopted, will find good homes and can spend the holidays with new families.

Regular adoption fees are $160 for puppies and kittens up to 6 months; $110 for adult dogs and cats (6 months and up); $55 for senior dogs and cats (7 years and up); and $45 for all bunnies. For more information, call 760.888.2247 or check the website at www.escondidohumanesociety.org.

North County Homeless Kids Walked for the ‘Slum Dogs’ of India

Kids and families from North County Solutions for Change joined the ONEKind Foundation's walkathon at Rancho Buena Vista High School recently. Funds raised through that event will go to support Zamar Academy in Chennai, India. They formed two teams and competed to see which team could raise the most money. What makes this event so special is because of who participated - the kids and families from the campus of Solutions for Change, an organization that is helping to solve the homelessness of families in North County.

By involving the families like this is the staple of what Solutions for Change has created over the years. One of the core values is to equip the families they are helping to become givers themselves. By empowering these families, who once were homeless, instills the values and philosophy that Solutions for Change has been building. Solutions asks you to be part of the change - for today, tomorrow and forever, and engages those that are changing to be a change for others who are in the same, or worse, position than they are. They are located at 722 W. California Ave., Vista; phone 760.941.6545.
