A Cristmas Carol, The Musical
A Review
by Paul Van Middlesworth

photoLast Friday evening we represented “The Paper” on press night at the Lawrence Welk Resorts holiday season offering of “A Christmas Carol, The Musical.” It had been several years since we attended a dinner theater presentation at Lawrence Welk’s.

We entered the Canyon Grill at 6:30 for the pre-theater buffet There were no lines, no waiting. The salad bar was stocked with the usual items, all were fresh and delicious. We particularly liked the crab salad. The main buffet featured baked chicken, seafood lasagna and carved roasts. The vegetables, gravies and sauces were well prepared and presented. The dessert bar well stocked and the serving staff friendly and prompt. It was pure “comfort food,” nothing terribly fancy but all very good. The mashed potatoes were real, not hydrated, and the iced tea was brewed, not instant. We dawdled over our desserts, wine and coffee until it was time to stroll over to the theater for the 7:30 seating.

As we settled into our comfortable seats I happily noticed that “A Christmas Carol” was a ninety-minute presentation without intermission. Wonderful. I never know what to do during intermissions anyway. There are two dozen professional players in the cast of “A Christmas Carol” but it seemed there were twice that many. They filled the stage setting of 19th century London where misery, sadness, love, and hope, danced and sang together in the narrow streets. The familiar story of Ebeneezer Scrooge’s Christmas Eve voyage to redemption was faithfully told. Nothing was omitted.

photoThe entire evening was thoroughly enjoyable. Every thing was very well done. In contrast to the concert we attended at the Balboa Theater in downtown San Diego last week, the Lawrence Welk Village was an easy 20-minute off-freeway drive from our home in San Marcos. Parking was free, easy and close. No crowds no lines. Wunnerful! Wunnerful!

The hustle and bustle of the holiday season brings enough stress into our busy lives. We found the dinner and theater presentation of “A Christmas Carol” at Lawrence Welk Village to be satisfying, relaxing and inspiring. We found nothing not to like.
