Thanksgiving Day Meal Announced for the SM Senior Center

The Ranchland Church, Oaks Christian Church and the San Marcos Senior Center will be hosting the 11th annual Thanksgiving Day meal at the Senior Center, 111 Richmar Avenue, San Marcos, on Thursday, November 26th. Meals will be served from 10am to 1pm.

Meals are free and the entire community is welcome to come and share Thanksgiving lunch with the hosts. Food and cash donations are welcome and tax deductible. Needlepoint, Embroidery and Beading Exhibit on Display in Rancho Bernardo

The Palomar Mountain Stitchers Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild and the Threaded Needle Chapter is participating in an exhibit at Casa De Las Campanas retirement facility located at 18655 W. Bernardo Road, San Diego (Rancho Bernardo). The Sorby Art Galleria on the 2nd floor is the showcase for the exhibit which includes needlepoint, embroidery and beading on a variety of stitches pieces. (See photo below). The exhibit is in place until Thursday, December 3rd. The public is invited to view this exquisite exhibit of Needle Art.

Nearly 200 People 'Fall in Love' at Humane Society Gala

Nearly 200 people and their well-dressed canine companions filled a sold-out room at Orfila Winery recently for the Escondido Humane Society's annual "Tails at Twilight" gala.

The event raised funds needed to care for animals currently in the shelter as well as the thousands more that will come to the shelter this year in need of a safe haven and new homes. This year's theme "Fall in Love" celebrated the season and the love shared between people and their pets. November Daughter Veterans of the Civil War Meeting Announced

Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (DUVCW), 1861-1865, Nancy Hanks Lincoln Tent No. 5, will meet on Tuesday, November 24, at 11am in the Veterans Memorial Building, Zoo Drive and Park Boulevard in Balboa Park, San Diego. For information about DUVCW, call 619.475.0153.

Barbara Mondt, was the featured speaker on Saturday, November 14, at Mt. Hope Cemetery honoring Thomas Chapman Shelly who was the last Union soldier to die in San Diego County in 1943.

Conservatives to Present Film Premiere of Global Warming Documentary

The community is invited to join the North County Conservatives for a screening of the Escondido premiere of the film "Not Evil Just Wrong." This is the feature-length documentary that analyzes the true costs of the global warming question. The showing will be Saturday, November 21, at 7pm, in the Mitchell Room at Escondido City Hall, 201 North Broadway.

Pipe Organ Concert Scheduled for Sunday, November 22

On Sunday, November 22, the Music Series of First United Methodist Church of Escondido will present a pipe organ concert by Dr. Michael D. Munson. The concert will be held in the Church Sanctuary at 3:30pm, and followed by an artist reception. The church is located at 341 So. Kalmia St., Escondido. Buena Vista Audubon Announces Upcoming Programs


The Preschool Nature Storytime will be Monday, November 23, at 10am. All preschoolers 3-5 years old are welcome, with an adult. Kids will be offered a "gobbling" good time learning about turkeys; just in time for Thanksgiving. There will be an hour of songs, a story, and a Thanksgiving craft. The event is free, and is held at the B.V. Audubon Nature Center, 2202 So. Coast Hwy., Oceanside. For large groups, call Mary Ellen at 760.918.6622.

Then, always on the last Saturday of the month (November 28, this month), at 8:30am, is the Basic Birding class at the B.V. Lagoon Landing in Carlsbad. Courses to identify native birds and fall migrants will be offered. Leader Tom Troy will help you identify birds by sight and sound, with instruction on the use of binoculars and spotting scopes. All ages are welcome. Take I-5 to Hwy.78 east; exit Jefferson; turn right and go to stoplight; turn right and park in Landing parking lot on right side of road. Mingei International Museum in Escondido Announces Exhibition


The Mingei Museum in Escondido offers the experience of enjoying the beauty and power of objects from over 55 cultures used for familial, tribal and community events: birth, childhood, initiation, marriage, death, and festivals and in religious expressions of Shamanism, Judaism, Christianity, Shinto, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam.

The exhibit runs until October 16, 2010. Mingei is located at 155 W. Grand Ave., Escondido, and is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11am to 4pm, and on the second Saturday from 11am to 8pm. Gift Of HOPE Challenge by Camp Hope

All companies/organizations are invited to join the 2009 Gift of HOPE Challenge between now and December 11, to expand the year-round children's programs to break the cycle of family violence by sharing with your co-workers, customers and members to help with the year-end pledge drive for Camp HOPE programs. The goal is for companies and organizations to raise a minimum of $1,000. The organization to raise the most money will receive a luncheon for up to 40 people on-site. Team members pledge gifts of any size and receive nature tiles that help build the Wall of HOPE. Red, White, and Blue Society, Children of the American Revolution Invites Daughters of the American Revolution on Tour

Cheyenne McCarthy, president of the Red, White and Blue Society, C.A.R., and a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in San Diego, organized a tour of a new Ronald McDonald House facility for the youth organization and local San Diego chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), including local DAR chapters in San Diego, Escondido, Vista, and Oceanside. The new facility features 47 bedrooms, outgrowing their old 12-bedroom facility.

C.A.R., is a patriotic youth group that "trains good citizens, develops leaders, and promotes love of the United States of American and its heritage." Members support our military, participate in conservation, community service projects, and various patriotic events.

Coastal Communities Concert Band's Annual Holiday Concert to Benefit Meals On Wheels

The 15th annual holiday concert by the Coastal Communities Concert Band will be held on Sunday, December 6, at 2pm, at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 No. Escondido Blvd. This concert is always a sell-out, and proceeds benefit seniors with Meals-on-Wheels in all of San Diego County. General admission is $15/person; Seniors (60+) and children (12 and under) are $12.50.

The glorious sounds of brass, wind and percussion instruments will herald the holiday season and will include a variety of old favorites and new holiday arrangements. Over the years the band has already donated over $100,000 to Meals-on-Wheels through this annual holiday event.

photoSan Marcos Girl A National Finalist in Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show

Jamielee Darley of San Marcos is one of the five finalists out of the entire nation to possibly be selected as the winner in the nationwide competition.

If she wins she will be featured on CBS-TV on December 1st during the broadcast of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show television special.
If she survives the current vote she will be in Round 3 with voting from November 23rd through December 1st. Then, if she wins, she’ll be on CBS-TV on December 1st.

Long Distance Bikers Visit San Marcos

Rosemary Haskins of San Marcos was recently visited by her grandson Jordan and his wife Laura. They drove to Portland, Oregon, from Albany, New York, then biked 1000 miles down to San Marcos, averaging 60 miles a day enjoying the rugged coastline of Oregon, the cool mornings in the Redwood National Forest. They spent a week with their grandmother, Rosemary. Haskins and now headed home.
