"Moonlight Magic" is Theme for Assistance League Fundraiser
Gary Carson and Kelsey have mystified, entertained and inspired millions of people in 38 countries with their magic and illusions. The Assistance League, a non-profit organization, is presenting this magic and illusion attraction for the whole family. This fundraising event will take place on Friday, November 6th., at the Center for the Arts, Escondido, at 7:30pm. Proceeds will benefit this all-volunteer group that has helped children in local communities since 1982.

RB Republican Women Donate Books to Poway Schools
Rancho Bernardo Republican Women have recently presented books to every school in the Poway Unified School District, as they have for the past seven years. Members choose books on American history, government or patriotism that are suitable to grade level, of interest to children and young adults and are library quality hardback editions. The book choices are then approved by the school system.
The Rancho Bernardo Republican Women, Federated, meets the third Friday of the month at Stoneridge Country Club. Programs are educational in the areas of government and politics. Guests are welcome. For membership information, call 858.674.1051 or 858.487.8992.

Camp Pendleton Welcomes Assistance Leagues
Seven San Diego Assistance League® chapters participated in an Operation School Bell® event at Camp Pendleton, treating 417 children of military families with new clothes to begin the school year. The new base commander, Colonel Marano and his wife stopped by to see first hand the work of the Assistance Leagues and the Operation School Bell program which provides school clothing and much needed essentials to students each year. Surbeck to Speak at Chafit Hadassah Meeting
Chafit Hadassah, Hadassah of San Diego's newest North County group, invites you to their next event and welcomes all in the community to attend. The guest speaker will be J.J. EMPAC to Hold Year-End Party
The Escondido Mobile/Manufactured Home Positive Action Committee (EMPAC) is hosting a year-end party on Thursday, October 29, at 7pm, in the East Valley Community Center, Main Building, 2245 East Valley Parkway, Escondido. "Western Campaign of the Civil War" is Program for Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War
At the Tuesday, October 27, meeting of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War (DUVCW), 1861-1865, Nancy Hanks Lincoln Tent 5, the program will be "The Western Campaign of the Civil War" and will be presented by Barbara Hemmingsten. The meeting will begin at 11am at the Veterans Memorial Building at Zoo Drive and Park Boulevard in Balboa Park, San Diego.
Members Susan Zimmer, Barbara Mondt and Marilyn Steber attended the Institution, Initiation and Installation of Officers for the new Mary Jane Safford Tent 92 recently in Temecula. The new president of Tent 92 is Kay Hildebrandt. The mission of the Daughters is to spread the teachings of patriotism, that those who dwell in this broad land of ours will so live that, in peace or in war, there shall be no stain on "The Flag Our Fathers Saved." Midway Mobil Donates to Escondido Charter High School
Midway Mobil of Escondido continues its support of Escondido Charter High School (ECHS) because of the school’s leadership in providing excellent educational opportunities to the community. The Mobil Educational Alliance Foundation makes ECHS one of its 4,000 nation-wide recipients of a $750.00 donation. Midway Mobil has contributed twelve grants totaling more than six thousand dollars to schools in Escondido.

Audubon Sponsors Basic Birding Class and Whelan Lake Bird Walk
Have some family fun learning to identify native birds and fall migrants at the Buena Vista Lagoon Landing on Jefferson St. in Carlsbad. Leader Tom Troy will help you identify birds by sight and sound with instruction on the use of binoculars and spotting scopes. All ages are welcome. The date is October 31 (always the last Saturday of the month), at 8:30am, at the Lagoon Landing. From I-5 to Hwy 78 east, exit Jefferson, turn right and go to stoplight. Fall migration is in full flight! Join Buena Vista Audubon Society members for a bird walk at Whelan Lake - always on the first Saturday of the month at 8:00am (this month on November 7). This is a bird sanctuary not usually open to the public, with a freshwater lake and riparian edge habitat. Directions: I-5 to 76. Turn left at Douglas and continue to the light at North River Rd. Daughters of the American Revolution to Salute Wounded Warriors at November Meeting
Two chapters of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), De Anza and Rancho Buena Vista Chapters, will co-host a joint meeting to honor today’s military with "A Salute to Wounded Warriors, Medics, Corpsmen, and their Support Staff." The event will be on Thursday, November 5, beginning at 10:30am in Rancho Santa Fe.
November is Veterans month and DAR is saluting and honoring the brave men and women who have given of themselves in defense of our freedom, along with the medics, corpsmen, and their support staff who have put their lives in peril to save wounded warriors.
The public is invited, and reservations are required. The cost is $30, with a choice of Roasted Vegetable Salad with (or without) spiced grilled chicken, (please specify). The chapters draw their members from Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Escondido, Fallbrook, Fairbanks Ranch, LaCosta, Leucadia, Oceanside, Olivenhain, Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego, San Marcos, Solana Beach, and Vista.
San Marcos Historical Society Moves to Walnut Grove Park
The San Marcos Museum has been moved to the Heritage Park area of Walnut Grove Park and will be restored to its original 1940-look within six months. In the interim, the Society has opened a temporary office and research library inside the historic Cox House in Heritage Park. During construction, the library will be open from Wednesday through Sunday from 12:30pm until 4pm. The Cox and Bidwell Houses are also open for viewing during those hours, with guided tours offered on weekends. Visitors are advised to call 24 hours in advance, in case the park is closed for the construction. The new address for the Historical Society is 1952 Sycamore Drive. Escondido Education Foundation Announces Launch of Innovative Classroom Projects Grant Program
The Escondido Education Foundation (EEF) announces the launch of the 2009-10 Innovative Classroom Projects Grant Program. Teachers in the Escondido Union School District may apply for up to $500 to fund a creative activity in their classroom, which they would otherwise not be able to offer. This program, formerly known as Teacher Mini-grants, supports projects in any disciplinary area for grades K-8. This year, EEF received funding from the Escondido Charitable Foundation in support of twenty additional projects exploring math and science for grades 4-8.
Proposals are due by 5pm on Friday, November 6, in the EEF office at the Carilyn Gilbert Education Center, 2310 Aldergrove Avenue, Escondido, 92029. No late or incomplete applications will be accepted. A committee of volunteers from the EEF Board and the community will review the grant applications. This program is competitive, which means that not everyone who applies will receive a grant. Results will be announced in December. The Innovative Classroom Projects Awards Ceremony will take place at 4pm on Friday, January 15, at the Education Center. Woman's Club to Meet on November 2nd
The next luncheon meeting of the Woman's Club of Escondido will be on Monday, November 2, starting at 10:30am, at their Clubhouse, 751 North Rose Street (corner Mission Ave). Cost is $9/person.
The program will be given by yours truly, Evelyn Madison, on her recent trip to Romania, where she will talk about the orphanages, "baby hospitals," and the schools she visited while there. Call for reservations to Ruth at 760.489.0579. Guests are welcome.
