The Senator Reports October 15th, 2009

Sen. Wyland

California Tax Commission Report
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)

Recently, the California Tax Commission proposed major changes to California’s tax structure. This commission, created last October, has the goals of re-examining and modernizing our state’s tax laws to create a more modern and stable tax structure.

Our current tax system relies too heavily upon the good years, when revenues are high and business is booming. Unfortunately, this approach allows us to spend way too much money in these good years, leaving us high and dry in the bad. One thing is for sure: any updates to California’s broken tax system or budget structure must include reforms that will create and retain jobs. Facing a 12.1% unemployment rate in California, with business fleeing the state everyday thanks to harsh regulations and unfair tax burdens, there is nothing more important in our state right now. Californians need jobs, and it’s time out main focus should be getting people back to work.

Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Final Area Code Reminder
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick

By now, you have most likely heard of the new area code rules coming to North County. Beginning October 24th, the new ten-digit dialing rules will become a permanent change to how we dial.

Over the last few months, the 760 area code has operated under a permissive dialing plan that allowed for you to continue placing calls using only seven digits. On October 24th, mandatory dialing will begin and you must dial ten digits or your call will not be connected. Furthermore, the introduction of the 442 area code “overlay” will begin in November.

During the last few months, residents have received a gradual introduction of how the system works. Telephone companies, mobile service providers, my office, and many others have gone to great lengths to educate all North County residents on the timeline for the change. However, if you still have questions regarding the change and how it affects you, please do not hesitate to contact my district office at (760) 929-7998.

Assemblyman Martin Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista, and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
