Global Spirit Concert to be Held Sunday in Oceanside
Global Spirit, the second concert in this year's OMFest/8th annual Oceanside Music Festival, combines liturgical and world folk music for an exciting blend of cultures, beliefs, and languages, united by their love of music, wrapped in an explosion of colorful costuming. It is a free event permeated with religious motives. The concert will be held Sunday, October 11, 2:00pm in the historic St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, 619 Pier View Way, downtown Oceanside. A Free Will Offering will be taken. Dog Adoption Set for this Saturday
The Escondido Humane Society will be having a dog adoption outreach on Saturday, October 10, from 11am to 2pm, at Kahoots in Escondido, 334 W. El Norte Parkway. Adoptable dogs will be at the store during the event. For more information, call 760.888.2247.
SM Lions Club
Wants You!
The San Marcos Lions Club is looking for people to join their biweekly meetings. They are a service organization that provides an opportunity to give back to the community. Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired. Their mission is "We Serve." Meetings are the first and third Thursday of every month from 12N to 1pm at the Acapulco Restaurant in San Marcos. Hearing Loss Association Meeting Scheduled
The Hearing Loss Association (HLA) will meet on Saturday, October 10, at 10am, in the Auditorium of the Escondido Joslyn Senior Center, 201 Park Avenue. Dr. Arthur Boothroyd, SDSU Professor, will speak on lip reading. He became interested in deafness as a result of having a deaf son. North County's Own Haunted House is Open in Escondido
The public is invited to get the scare of their lives at North County's own haunted house in Escondido. Located at the very scary, old Antique Emporium building at 333 E. Grand Ave., the 15-room "Grand Haunt" will be open the entire month of October, excluding Mondays and Tuesdays. The 1500 sq. foot haunt is filled to the gills with ghosts and ghouls, a mad scientist, and funeral parlor, including live actors, automatic scare tactics, smoke and mirrors made to scare the wits out of visitors.
Regular admission is $10/person, with a special $15/front-of-the-line pass, and "Lights-On" hours for younger children for only $5. "Grand Haunt" will be open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5-10pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm to Midnight. Special "Lights-On" hours on Saturdays and Sundays are from 3-5pm. Contemporary Women of North County Participates in Relay for Life
GFWC Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC) recently participated in the Relay for Life fundraiser at the Valley Middle School in Carlsbad. The event, which involved 19 teams and over 200 participants, helped raise over $47,000 for cancer survivors and their families. CWONC members who participated in a team included MaryAnne Donovan, Laura Collins, Betty Walden, Richard and Gertrude Flahive, and Don and Kathleen King. It was a touching and memorable experience for everyone involved, as they celebrated with over 30 survivors of this deadly disease and remembered those who have been lost.
The next meeting of CWONC, a local women's volunteer and social group, will be on Monday, October 12, with social at 6:00pm and the meeting at 6:30pm. CWONC meets the second Monday of every month at the historic Wood House in Woodland Park, 1148 Rock Springs Road, San Marcos. Golf Tournament to Benefit Charter High School Programs
Called the 8th Annual American Heritage Education Foundation Golf Tournament, the proceeds will benefit the athletic and extra-curricular programs of the Escondido Charter High School. The tournament will be held Monday, October 12, at The Vineyard Golf Course, 925 San Pasqual Road, Escondido, and is limited to the first 144 players. Charge for individual players is $175/each; or a foursome is $600. Player packages include a player spot, golf shirt, gift bag, lunch, BBQ dinner, and souvenir foursome photo. Game format is Best Ball, 4-Player Scramble, and Shotgun start. Registration and putting contest starts at 9:30 to 11:30am, then Opening Ceremony. Shotgun Start is at 12Noon. Tournament ends at 4:30pm; $100,000 Shoot Out; and Barbeque dinner and awards ceremony following. Dress Code: No denim; shorts no longer than knee, and collared shirt. Humane Society's "Tails at Twilight" Gala is Just Around the Corner
Fall has arrived and everyone at the Escondido Humane Society is gearing up to celebrate the season at the 16th annual "Tails at Twilight" gala is set for Saturday, October 17, at Orfila Vineyards and Winery, 13455 San Pasqual Road, Escondido. And you are invited! This year's theme, Fall in Love, will celebrate the season and the love shared between people and their pets in benefit of the lifesaving animal rescue efforts of the Humane Society. Well-behaved, leashed canine companions are invited to join their owners for a night of charity and fun.
The gala will include delectable cuisine, indulgent desserts, hosted bar, live entertainment, live and silent auctions, raffle, and much more. The VIP reception is from 4-5pm; general registration begins at 5pm. Dinner, live auction and entertainment is from 6:30 to 10pm. VIP tickets are $200/person, or $2,000 for a table for 10. Coastal Rose Society to Feature Clair Martin at Meeting
The California Coastal Rose Society (CCRS) will host the 2nd Annual Gwen Cleary Lecture on October 20th, at 7pm, in honor of the late, former member. The lecture will feature Mr. Clair Martin, Curator of Rose and Perennial Gardens at the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, CA. In keeping with Gwen's love of heritage roses, the title of his talk is "A Summer of English Rose Gardens."
Preceding the featured talk, from 6:15 to 6:45pm, Dr. Joel Ross will lead the rose-aholics discussion on problems that members are having growing roses in the coastal area. The Society meets on the third Tuesday of each month at Heritage Hall, 2650 Garfield, Carlsbad (n/w corner of Magee Park). Meetings are free and open to the public.
