Global Warming is a National Security Issue

With health care dominating the news cycle, the issue of climate change has been sent to the back burner. Over the summer, the House passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act (ACES), the first-ever federal global warming bill. The bill seeks to limit the amount of greenhouse gases sent into the atmosphere through a cap-and-trade system. The passage of this bill was a landmark act, but it now sits in the Senate, waiting for a vote.

We can’t forget about the huge opportunity we have, not only to protect our environment, but also to make America safer. The Center for Naval Analyses, a government-financed research group, recently released a report detailing the effects of climate change on our national security. Increased drought, flooding, and more powerful storms, in addition to the security threat created by our dependence on foreign sources of fossil fuel, all make the world a much more dangerous place, and America less safe.

Stopping global warming in its tracks can only be done by reducing the amount of carbon we release into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, and the only way to make this happen is through a combination of a tough cap-and-trade system, stronger even than the one in ACES, and investments in truly renewable sources of energy such as wind, solar, geothermal, and tidal power. While health care dominates domestic news and Afghanistan occupies us abroad, we cannot forget about the opportunity we have to repower our country and our economy, and at the same time make America safer, by passing a strong cap-and-trade bill through the Senate.

Letters to the Editor are always welcome.

Please limit your submission to 250 words. As always, we reserve the right to edit for length, content, and good taste.

We prefer submittals via email. Please send to: thepaper@cox.net but will accept faxed copies and regular mail. We will, however, screech mightily if and when we receive them because, being lazy, we don’t like to have to retype Letters to the Editor or Press Releases. With email it’s a lot quicker and easier to edit.

If you have an item for The Social Butterfly, you can email that to: TheSocialButterfly@cox.net

Readers are expected to comport themselves at all times as ladies and gentlemen. Seeing as how that's all that reads The Paper, that should be easy.

We require your name, address, and phone number so we can verify the letter. We will not, however, publish your address or phone number.

Fax to:
760.741.7800

Regular mail to:
