Rancho Buena Vista Chapter DAR Celebrates Constitution Week

Today, Thursday, September 17th, begins the national celebration of Constitution Week. This week-long commemoration of America's most important document is one of our country's least known official observances. In 1955, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annualy to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on August 2, 1956, by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

To celebrate Constitution Week, the RBV Chapter has a display at the San Marcos Library showing the history and importance of the U.S. Constitution. In addition, at the September chapter meeting, the Chapter Constitution Week Chairman read Proclamations from the mayors of the cities of San Marcos and Vista congratulating DAR on promoting the Constitution through this week-long celebration.

Known as the largest women’s patriotic organization in the world, DAR has over 165,000 members with approximately 3,000 chapters in all 50 states and 11 foreign countries. The DAR promotes genealogical research, knowledge of American history through essay contests and community events to foster true patriotism and love of country. For more information contact 760-736-0178 or rbvdar@gmail.com.

Plan to Walk for "Friends of the Poor"

"Walk A Mile In My Shoes" will be the second annual Friends of the Poor Walk to help neighbors in need. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul reports that the number of people seeking help has more than doubled over the last year, due to rising unemployment. Needing a friend and having no one to turn to in a moment of need is a trying experience for anyone, but especially the poor.

This year, on Saturday, September 26, the Society will hold its second annual nationwide Friends of the Poor Walk, and are encouraging people all across the country to become Friends of the Poor, too. Pledges made to each local walker will stay in their community. Three walk locations are planned in San Diego County on that day. The Valley Center Walk will be held at Adams Park, 26751 Cole Grade Rd., Valley Center, from 10am to 12Noon. In Vista, walkers will gather at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 525 W. Vista Way, starting at 9am; and The San Ysidro Walk will start at Howard Lane Neighborhood Park at Dairy Mart Road and Beyer Blvd. Registration will start at 8:30am and the walk at 9am.

The Society encourages everyone to participate in the Friends Walk locally -- as walkers, pledgers, volunteers, or all three. To register as a walker, to pledge support, or for more information, go to www.svdpfriendsofthepoorwalk.org. Sign up, walk a mile in someone else's shoes, and become a friend of the poor. Find our how good it feels to give. For information, call Patrick Conger in Valley Center at 760.751.9039; Marlene Steffen, 760.724.4468 in Vista; and Margarita Galindo at 619.920.3755 in San Ysidro.

Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside Sends Kids Back to School with New Clothes

Through a generous partnership with JCPenney's, the Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside received a JCP Grant and were able to send kids back to school with $50 gift cards for new clothing. The Oceanside geographical area holds a high proportion of low-income families, many of whom were able to attend Summer Camps at BGCO on scholarships. The ability to provide individuals and families with an extra $50 to shop for clothes at the beginning of the school year is a help for those in need and a delight for the kids that easily translates to smiling faces! Check the website at www.bgcoceanside.org.

Education Foundation Announces "Back to School" Fundraiser

It's time to go back to school - even us grown-ups! On Saturday, September 26, from 10am to 12Noon, the Escondido Education Foundation (EEF) invites parents, educators, business people, and community leaders to the Carilyn Gilbert Education Center, 2310 Aldergrove Avenue, Escondido, the school district's headquarters, for an original fundraiser in support of innovative programs in Escondido's public K-8 classrooms, the "Back to School Brunch. "Gourmet cafeteria fare" will start the day, where guests will be able to share memories and have those memories tested (as in "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader”). Nostalgia for Escondido alma maters will mix with impressive evidence of student achievement gained through programs supported by the Foundation, Project LIVE and Innovative Classroom Projects. Guests are requested to don "school and playground attire" to get in the mood of the day.

The EEF is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation founded in 2004 to raise funds in support of Escondido's public schools, and invests program dollars in the classroom. By building better understanding and partnerships in the community and region, the EEF takes a leadership role in developing broad and long-term support for public education in the primary and secondary grades, and supports programs that demonstrate measurable impact for students and lasting benefits to teachers in the 23-school system. For additional information, contact the EEF at 760.432.2392; email Katie Ragazzi at kragazzi@eusd4kids.org, or check the website at www.eef4kids.net.
