Assistance League Awards $15,000 in Scholarships

The Assistance League of Inland North County (ALINC) awarded scholarships totaling $15,000 to California State University at San Marcos, School of Nursing, for outstanding students to help them prepare for a career in nursing. Appearing in the photo in the hospital bed is "Fred," a human simulator used in nurse training.

Assistance League is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization working to make a difference in the local community. For information, check the website at www.assistanceleague.info.

Woman's Club Program to Feature Musical Travel Through History

The Woman's Club of Escondido will meet for their luncheon meeting September 14 at 10:30am, at their Clubhouse, 751 No. Rose, Escondido. Greek Festival Scheduled

Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church has scheduled their 2009 Greek Festival for Saturday, September 12, from 10am to 10pm, and Sunday, September 13, from 11am to 9pm. It will be held at the church at 3459 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff, half mile east of I-5. There will be children's games, church tours, live Greek music, folk dancing, Greek cuisine, vendor booths, and a chance to win a 2010 Mercedes C300. "Health Care Bill" to be Discussed at LSM Democratic Club Meeting

On Saturday, September 12, the Lake San Marcos Democratic Club will hold their monthly meeting, at 1pm (social time at 12:30). The topic of the month will be the "Health Care Bill" and the featured speaker will be Dr. Zoltan Lucas, a retired professor of surgery at Stanford University Medical School. He has a MPH degree in epidemiology, and continues to teach in medical schools since retiring.

Joan Ireland to Report on National Convention Information


When the Escondido Hearing Loss Association (HLA) meets at 10am on Saturday, September 12, Joan Ireland will report on the Hearing Loss Association's National Convention she attended in Nashville, TN. The meetings are held at the Escondido Joslyn Senior Center auditorium, 210 Park Avenue. There will be refreshments, and 50/50 cash drawing. RB Chorale to Kick Off Fall Semester

Pat Bean and the RB Chorale will kick off the Fall 2009 semester with its first rehearsal on Tuesday, September 8. Rehearsals are every Tuesday at 7:30pm at Westwood Elementary School, 17449 Matinal Road, San Diego (Rancho Bernardo). The Chorale is actively seeking new members from across San Diego County interested in joining them for their annual holiday shows.

The production “Glad Tidings We SING!” will be held at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts on December 21 and 22. Monies raised during the holiday shows fund the annual scholarships awarded in the Spring. YMCA Presents "The Y Event Poolside"

The Palomar Family YMCA will be holding a fundraiser called "The Y Event Poolside" at their new aquatics complex located at the YMCA site on Saturday, September 12, from 6pm to 10pm, with hors d'oeuvres, beer and wine pairings, and a silent auction. Tickets are $75/person or eight tickets for $500.

In the Opportunity Drawing, the winner will choose from a 7-day Alaskan Cruise, a 7-day Hawaiian Cruise or $2,500 prize, and the ticket cost is $25/ticket or five for $100. Rose Society September Events

On Saturday, September 5, from 9am to 11am, the California Coastal Rose Society will hold the final "dead-heading" and general maintenance work day of the summer at the southwest corner of Magee Park Rose Garden, corner of Beech Avenue and Garfield Street, Carlsbad. The monthly meetings start again on the third Tuesday of the month (September 15) at 7pm at Heritage Hall, 2650 Garfield (northwest corner of Magee Park. This meeting will feature Dr. Keith and Debbie Zary from Jackson and Perkins Roses, who will speak on "Roses of the 21st Century" and will cover how rose hybridizing is done, how plants to be sold are chosen, new roses of 2009 will be reviewed, and new roses to be introduced in 2010 will be highlighted.

Preceding the featured talk, from 6:15 to 6:45pm, Dr. Joel Ross will continue his Rose-aholics lecture series regarding cultivating new roses. Patio Playhouse Presents "The Taming of The Shrew"

Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," a classic comedy gets a modern day setting in an exciting new production directed by Christa Sherman, starting Friday, September 11 through Sunday, October 4. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm, at the Patio Playhouse, 201 E. Grand Avenue, Suite 1D, Escondido. Downtown Live! Line-Up

The Escondido Downtown Business Association (DBA) debuted the "Downtown Live" event on August 1, at Grand and Kalmia, downtown Escondido. The event lasts for another two months and will include performance arts, food, wine, and more. On a recent weekend a Southern Rock group, "Tone Junkies," were featured. Children's Museum Announces September Program

On Saturday, September 12, at the Children's Museum, the program will be "Corn, Wonderful Corn!" Learn about all the everyday products that can be made from corn. Do a science experiment and pop some corn for everyone to eat. Redwood Elderlink to Hold Music Festival

Eve Selis will return to the Redwood Elderlink Music Festival on Saturday, September 12, from 4pm to 7pm. She is one of the top singers on the San Diego roots music scene and a multiple San Diego Music Awards winner. In addition, Berkley Hart will also be there doing their two-part harmony to infuse their songs with strains of bluegrass, folk, country, and rock.

There will be food and drinks, silent and live auctions, and an opportunity drawing. The auctions will include jewelry, casino and golf packages, signed sports and entertainment memorabilia, dining at local eateries, passes to local attractions, and round trip airfare vouchers.

Rancho Bernardo Art Association Announces Artist Showings

During the month of September, the following artists will be displaying their art works at various locations throughout the Rancho Bernardo area:

Dick Johnson's work will be at the Incredible Cafe, 11828 Rancho Bernardo Rd., 6:30am through dinner every day. Art work of Nirmala Sundharadas will be at the Pacific Trust Bank, 16536 Bernardo Center Dr., from 9am to 6pm, Mon-Thur.; 9am-7pm on Friday; and 9am-4pm on Saturdays. Richie Stewart art will be at the Rancho Bernardo Community Tennis Club, 18402 W. Bernardo Dr., next to the Joslyn Senior Center, from 7:30am-10:30pm, Mon-Fri. Karen Vincent will display her art at the Poway Vision Care, 13035 Pomerado Road, Suite C, Poway.

On the first Friday of each month, from 3:30pm-9pm, you are invited to meet various artist members of the Rancho Bernardo Art Association at the Rancho Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo Del Verano Norte. C.A.R. Society Learns Escondido History

Children of American Revolution (C.A.R.), members of the Red, White, and Blue C.A.R. Society, met recently at the Escondido History Center where the youths toured a Victorian home, the Train Depot and railcar used for mail delivery. After the tour, they played Victorian era games, followed by a picnic lunch in Grape Day Park. Society President Cheyenne McCarthy, of Fallbrook, concluded the day's events by leading a brief group meeting.

The C.A.R. is a patriotic youth group that “trains good citizens, develops leaders, and promotes love of the United States of America and its heritage.”
