The Editor

To The Editor:

I sincerely enjoyed the story on the history of the "Pony Express," in your August 13th paper. It is rumored that one of my early ancestors was indeed a Pony Express Rider. I would really like to research this further. Is it possible to find out where to contact Lyle E. Davis. I am also very interested in obtaining a print or a copy of the painting on the cover of the paper: The Pony Express rider on the Palomino Pony with a revolver in his hand. Any information you may have, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You very much for your time

Editor’s Notes: Thank you for the kind words, Mr. Segraves. Your email reached Lyle E. Davis . . . that’s me. There were many Pony Express riders whose names were not recorded. Wells Fargo and the Pony Express stations were not the greatest at keeping records in the early days. As you know, the Pony Express only lasted 18 months so many records that were not kept, were never, in fact, entered at all. One resource I found that you may wish to check to see if your ancestor is listed is: www.xphomestation.com/names.html As to the cover art, I have forwarded a jpg copy of the artwork to your email account. Thank you for writing.

The Sprinter

Kudos to Logan Jenkins for his astute article on subject in today's paper. Anyone who has paid attention has known the Sprinter would only serve as a half billion dollar boondoggle feature, not a transportation solution. While the free rides may pick up a few extra passengers, the lack of riders has nothing to do with economics but rather lack of practical accessibility. All the huge, virtually empty Breeze buses cruising the streets, along now with the Sprinter, are costing the taxpayers millions of dollars to cover the North County Transit District's salaries, maintenance and operational overhead. Except for maybe a few (rush hour) runs on certain routes, why does it need such huge buses, when smaller vans would still be practically empty? It wouldn't seem quite as wasteful but who is held accountable in our bureaucratic, taxpayer rip off culture?

Leave Chief Maher Alone

Dear Sir:

I just read your August 20, 2009, article entitled entitled "Chief Jim Maher Defends Checkpoints." As stated in your article a number of Latino critics from the Latino American Democratic Club aren't too happy about the Police Chief conducting these checkpoints or the results from them. In addition, this group claims that these checkpoints are strictly designed to deport illegal aliens (immigrants). My opinion regarding the views of the Latino American Democratic Club is this: TOO DAMN BAD! First of all, I want to commend Chief Maher and his Officers for conducting these checkpoints. The last time I drove through one of these checkpoints and was asked to see my driver's license I don't recall seeing the officers treating any driver differently regardless of their race or the color of their skin. Secondly, if a club is going to incorporate the word "American" in its organization's name I strongly suggest that the "club" be prepared to stand for and support all of our AMERICAN laws. Not just the ones that benefit them that they are ready and quick to abuse. We all know the ones I'm talking about, like free rental assistance, free medical, free school lunches, free education, and "no documentation needed" home/car loans. Groups such as this are nothing more in my opinion than a group of free loaders who care nothing about abiding by the laws of this great nation yet expect all the benefits that should be afforded ONLY to our citizens who are here legally and who abide by our American law system. Am I not correct that the California DMV manual states EVERYONE driving a motor vehicle in our state is REQUIRED to have a VALID DRIVER'S LICENSE and AUTOMOBILE INSURANCE? Does this "club" and its members they represent have a special sense of entitlement that they are ABOVE THE LAW and a are not expected to abide by the law? Does this group not have the mental capacity to realize that what Chief Maher and his Officers are doing is protecting all of us from a drunk driver, someone under the influence of drugs, or perhaps someone trying to escape the law for whatever reason.

Thank You,
/s/G. W. Miller

More on Chief Maher

I was shocked to read the article that Chief Maher is trying to deport illegal aliens. Just because they may be driving a stolen vehicle, no license, no insurance, and they don’t pay taxes, pay into Social Security, or serve in our military. They do know where the emergency room is located at hospitals for free medical treatment. They are an embarrassment to the Hispanic American community. And as for the Latino American Club, hire a bus, I will pay for the gas, put them all on it and drive it south of the border where being an honest politician or law enforcement officer is an automatic death sentence.

Chief, you are my type of American.
