Social Butterfly August 13th, 2009

Evelyn Madison- The Social Butterfly

photoSpecial Comedian to do Benefit Performance for Green Oak Ranch

Kathy Buckley, America's first hearing impaired comedian, will be performing on Thursday, August 27, at 7pm, at the Crossroads Christian Reformed Church, 2406 North Twin Oaks Valley Road, San Marcos. Tickets are $10/person, in advance, and proceeds benefit Green Oak Ranch.

Kathy Buckley's extraordinary life story inspires and entertains. Millions have seen and heard Kathy's story through her appearances on nearly all major television talk and interview shows such as "The Tonight Show," "Good Morning America," "Inside Edition," and many others. In addition, she has co-starred in such TV series as "Touched by an Angel," as well as her own original award winning PBS special, "No Labels, No Limits." Kathy's humor is drawn from her life experiences - misdiagnosed and labeled as mentally retarded, a near fatal accident (run over by a Lifeguard Jeep and declared dead) that left her with five years of intermittent paralysis, and cervical cancer.

As a young child, Kathy was put in a special school for handicapped and mentally retarded children. Sometime later "experts" determined she wasn't mentally retarded, she was deaf! Cancer, sexual abuse, cruel labels . . . They're part of Kathy's life story. Yet, her irrepressible spirit and unusual faith remain unquenched. Her message is fitting for all who struggle with self-image, and are often overwhelmed by sadness. While she makes you laugh, she will also cause you to think. You will gain an entirely new perspective after an evening with Kathy Buckley.

Green Oak Ranch Ministries is a nonprofit residential community for adults suffering from chronic chemical addictions. Most of the residents are indigent; many were homeless prior to admission to the Green Oak Ranch community.

Carl Fielstra, Director of Green Oak Ranch Ministries, says he hopes for a good turnout for Kathy's performance, her story is amazing, her performance is both funny and inspiring. "I am grateful this very funny woman is bringing her comedy and inspiration to us. She will bless and inspire all who attend this special evening." For more information and reservations, call Green Oak Ranch at 760.727.0251.

Assistance League Chapters Support Children of Enlisted Military Personnel

For the fifth year, seven southern California Assistance League Chapters, including the Inland North County and the North Coast chapters, provided new clothing and shoes to children of enlisted military personnel on Camp Pendleton Marine Base in Oceanside. The Operation School Bell program of the Assistance Leagues is for the purpose of helping outfit youngsters with new clothing for back to school. Each child receives two tops, two pants/jeans, six underwear, three pair of socks, shoe vouchers, jackets/pullovers, hygiene kits, dictionaries, and when funds are available, art supplies. Also, the chapters provide a "thank you for your service to our country" note signed by the participating chapter.

The program at Camp Pendleton started in 2005 helping approximately 414 children the first year. Each year since then has averaged about that same number. The need is great and the chapters participating want to make every effort to help as many children as possible. In addition, two chapters team up to clothe infants and toddlers three times a year; this past January they helped over 350 children. One chapter also provides new car seats, strollers, cribs, mattresses, and linens to any family of an enlisted personnel in need; and has established a scholarship for a graduating senior from a military family at San Clemente High School.

To contact the Inland North County chapter, call 760.746.7532, or visit their Thrift Shop at 2068 E. Valley Parkway, Escondido, which is the major source of funding for their programs.
