Marines were asked what they would like in the monthly packages of snacks and toiletries sent to them, the answer was "desert water bags." In addition to sending packages to servicemen, DAR supports an Appalachian school classroom by providing books, supplies and a photocopier. Faith Leaders Urged Legislators to Prioritize Programs for Budget

Holding a symbolic safety net filled with hearts and through a Day of Fasting and Prayer, more than 150 faith leaders and people of faith urged the Governor to pass a balanced, common sense, moral budget that gives top priority to programs that provide for the basic needs of children, the disabled and the poor and unemployed who cannot provide for themselves.

Sponsored by the Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice (ICWJ) of San Diego County, the Prayer Vigils appealed to the hearts of policy makers and responded to the profound distress of the poor, sick, or vulnerable in our communities who turn to social services as their last resort. Prayer Vigils took place recently in front of the Vista Community Clinic and the Comprehensive Health Center-Euclid Avenue in San Diego, and highlighted the potential losses to those for whom these clinics serve as a lifeline.

More than three dozen clergy and faith leaders prayed for the poor and the vulnerable most likely to suffer devastating losses through the budget cuts. "We call on Governor Schwarzenegger to pass a balanced, common sense, moral budget that includes pragmatic cuts and new revenues, and urge our policy makers to protect services to the needy and everyone in society to contribute to solving the budget problems," said Rabbi Laurie Coskey, Executive Director of ICWJ.
