Humane Society Marking National Rabbit Week

A lot of times, dogs and cats get most of the attention from potential adopters at the Humane Society. But seven days – Wednesday, July 15 thru Wednesday, July 22 – are set aside for our bunny friends this month for National Rabbit Week.

On Saturday, July 18, from 11am to 1pm, the Escondido Humane Society is having a class on rabbit care. Patricia Mulcahy, education director at the S.D. House Rabbit Society, will teach rabbit owners and potential bunny adopters about rabbit care, adoption, and various bunny-related topics. Adoptable bunnies from the shelter will take part in the class for hands-on demonstrations about proper handling and care. Attendees are asked to call 760.888.2242 to RSVP. "Broadway To The Beatles" Opens Season at Kit Carson Park

The first show of the sixth annual "Plays In The Park" series at Escondido's Kit Carson Amphitheatre is on Saturday, July 18. PaccoArts, a new entertainment production company, kicks off its inaugural season with an eclectic musical revue with "From Broadway to the Beatles" theme. With over 20 talented performers from San Diego and Temecula, this music revue will feature performers of all ages, and songs of all genres. The evening will feature great numbers from Broadway shows, and will showcase Motown, Latin, Pop, and Rock selections, and will cover everything from contemporary pop to the tunes of Tin Pan Alley.

The concert will be at the Kit Carson Park Amphitheater, 3133 Bear Valley Parkway, Escondido. Tickets are $20 at the door with free parking. Doors open at 7:30pm, show starts at 8pm. For more information, check the website at www.pitpescondido.com or www.paccoarts.com.

Bluegrass Festival and Ice Cream Social Announced

The 6th Annual Bluegrass Festival and Ice Cream Social will take place on Sunday, July 26, from 4pm to 6:30pm, at the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe, 651 East Vista Way, Vista, and will feature The Virtual Strangers Band which includes Mike Tatar Sr. on banjo, Jon Cherry on mandolin, Yvonne Tatar on bass, and Kit Birkett on guitar.

Tickets for the event are $10, and can be purchased online at www.visitixonline.com, at the Adobe Gift Shop, or at the door the day of the event. Purchase includes choice of an ice cream sundae or root beer float. Sodas and water will be available for purchase.

Daughters of Union Veterans Meeting Scheduled

Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865, Nancy Hanks Lincoln Tent No. 5 will meet at 11am on July 28 in the Veterans Memorial War Building at Zoo Drive and Park Boulevard in Balboa Park, San Diego. The mission of the Daughters is to spread widely the teachings of patriotism, that those who dwell in this broad land of ours will so live that, in peace or in war, there shall be no stain on "The Flag Our Fathers Saved."

All daughters (granddaughters, etc., direct descendents) of honorably discharged soldiers, sailors and marines who served in the Union Army or Navy during the Rebellion of 1861-1865, including those who died or were killed during their term of service, whether members of the Grand Army of the Republic or not, who have attained the age of eight years, are eligible for membership. It is the oldest and largest of all Civil War American Women's organization genealogically based on lineal descent. For information call (619) 475-0153.

The Carlsbad Alumni Summer Soiree Second Chance Reunion is scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 31, August 1 and 2. Events are planned for the entire weekend, starting with the Friday Night Fiesta at Fidel's, from 7pm to closing. Tickets are $10/person. Food deals and a no host bar.

On Saturday, dance to live music and a private concert from Reggie Smith, from 5:30pm to 9pm, then DJ music from 9pm to closing, with music from the 50's thru the 2000's, at Ocean House, (formerly Neiman's, Twin Inns). Tickets are included with the weekend package if you paid Friday night, otherwise, it is $20 at the door.

Sunday will be a group photo in front of the High School at 1:30pm in the teachers' parking lot. Meet at the school entrance under the sign. This is a last chance as they are tearing down CHS. Then the Battle of the Chefs picnic potluck from 2pm-4pm at Magee Park, where there are shuffleboard, horseshoe pits, picnic area with barbecue facilities and a beautiful rose garden. Who can come up with the best nachos or mac and cheese? Doesn't have to be fancy. Bring something to share; it can even be chips and salsa. Then an After Party in the Village of Carlsbad from 5pm-9pm (an alumni might be making a special music appearance at this event).

This weekend is a casual, fun weekend, and you're encouraged to wear school colors - purple, white, yellow, or gold. You must be at least 18 years of age, or 21 and up with valid ID to enter bar. Please RSVP to carlsbadalumni@yahoo.com.

Poetry Readings Scheduled in Coming Weeks

On Friday, July 17, starting at 7pm, Tomas Lucero will be the featured poet at the Village Idiots Literary Society's monthly literature reading. An inspiring presentation with open mic time for all to share their writing, and time to meet and greet. Admission is free. Location is the Gallery 204, 204 Main St., Vista.

Then on Sunday, July 19, at 3pm, Sunset Poets will meet at the Flying Bridge Restaurant, 1105 No. Coast Highway, Oceanside. The featured poet will be William Archila, who will read from his new book The Art of Exile. More information about Mr. Archila and his book can be found at www.SunsetPoets.org. The reading is free and open to the public. An open mic reading will follow.

Saturday, July 25, from 7-9pm, at St. Paul's Cathedral, Fifth and Nutmeg, San Diego, will be the next place where The Center for the Performing & Visual Arts will present its annual Art/Jazz/Poetry Coffeehouse. Readings by well-known local poets, Chris Baron, Trish Dugger, Shadab Zeest Hashmi, Lizz Huerta, Eric Johnson, and Clifton King, and an exhibit by area artists in an atmosphere of soft lights, the music of San Diego jazz trio JAM, decadent desserts, and Fair-Trade Bishop's Blend Coffee.
