Evelyn Madison- The Social Butterfly
"Poppy Day" Declared in
San Marcos
Not many of us will ever have a
special day declared in our
honor but then there are not
very many of us locally that
turn 100 on any given day
either. Anthony Cardarella of
San Marcos did just that on
Saturday, the 13th, however, his "surprise" birthday party was
held on Thursday. I say "surprise"
because it started out to
be a surprise party, except how
do 3, 4 and 5 year olds keep a
surprise? They don't!
Tony goes to the Questhaven
Park in San Elijo Hills almost
every day to sit with and talk to
kids there, mostly 3, 4 and 5
year olds, and their parents. He
also takes them Tootsie Rolls.
They all know him and love
him, so it was no surprise to
have a great turnout for his
party, even with relatives from
Tennessee (his niece, Annette Falk
and her husband, Jim), in addition
to his daughter and son-in-law,
Carol and Gary Gidner, (with
whom he lives) and great grandchild
Addison, there to celebrate.
His daughter was an only
child; he has two grandchildren,
Damon, 33, and Courtney, 27,
and one great grandchild,
Addison, 3 years old. Gary
Gidner said one of the things
Tony really looks forward to is
an Italian culture thing --
Sundays at 2pm he has to have
some pasta! Sounds good to
me.
Tony was born in Buffalo, New
York. In 1997 he moved to San
Marcos with his wife, Rose, to
be close to his daughter and
family. Rose died in 1998. He
was in World War II, and was
awarded a Purple Heart for his
service on Omaha Beach in
Normandy. He was injured and
had a schrapnel wound to his
leg from a German 88 shell.
Council members Hal Martin
and Rebecka Jones were there
to present a plaque officially
naming Thursday as "Poppy
Day" in his honor. Becky
Nutter was instrumental in getting
the ball rolling for his party,
and it was supposed to be a
party with cupcakes (that she
makes). It turned out to be a
grand event with lots of food,
drinks, and cupcakes, and
approximately 75 people
attending (including the "little
ones"). What a great day!
Happy Birthday, Tony!

L-R, San Marcos Councilmember Rebecca Jones presents a Proclamation by the city naming "Poppy Day" after Anthony "Tony" Cardarella. To the rear is Tony's daughter, Carol Gidner, his son-in-law, Gary, Councilmember Hal Martin, and at the bottom right, Tony's great-granddaughter, Addison.

"Driving Out Hunger"
Gears Back Up
Local business extends food
drive to serve more families in
need. After successfully collecting
more than 1,885 pounds of
nonperishable food during the
month of May, local NAPA
Auto Parts stores and NAPA
AutoCare Repair Centers are
extending their "Drive Out
Hunger" food drive campaign
to the end of June in hopes of
helping even more local families
in need. To participate, individuals
can drop off food items to
any of the participating NAPA
stores and repair centers.
Family-friendly foods are in
highest need, including peanut
butter, canned tuna, cereal, dry pasta, canned fruits and vegetables,
and juice.
Drive Out Hunger, which benefits
Interfaith Community
Services, aims to unite the community
and respond to the critical
demand for food in a big
way. With the economic downturn,
Interfaith has consistently
experienced a 40 percent
increase in families needing
emergency food assistance.
