Assisteens Making a Difference in Community
Members of Assisteens, a teen auxiliary of the Assistance League of Inland North County, are making plans for their senior presentation and dinner after completing a very rewarding and busy year of volunteer work filled with activities and projects serving others in hopes of making a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.
Some of the projects and activities of these active teenagers were the Lake Dixon clean-up, cooked a Thanksgiving meal at the Center for Community Solutions, gift wrapped and delivered fifty shoe boxes filled with sundries and small gifts to Palomar-Pomerado Behavioral Health, and worked with children at Interfaith Community Services in a hands-on Valentines project. Recently they entertained residents of Aegis of Escondido retirement center with their annual fashion show, with the theme of "Barbie Turns Fifty." They held two fundraisers, volunteered in the Thrift Shop, and worked in Operation School Bell clothing children in need from the community.

Congratulations to these teens for putting caring and commitment into action." They are l-r: Maddie Russo, Kristie Matsuoka, Brenlyn Hoyle, McKenna Plant, Courtney Childress, Robert Burns, Camille Moody, and Alexa Loeser.
High school students who would like to volunteer in their community are invited to join Assisteens. For information, call 760.746.7532, or check the website at www.assistanceleague.info.
DAR Celebrates Derby Day and New Members
Joanne Murphy presented to the Rancho Buena Vista Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution a history of horse racing in colonial times on Derby Day, May 2. The British settlers brought horses and horse racing with them to the New World, with the first racetrack laid out on Long Island as early as 1665. Due to the promotion of racing by Francis Nichols, he became known as the father of US horse racing. In spite of laws against horse racing, the sport slowly spread throughout the colonies, becoming known as the "Sport of Kings." Jamestown was a very popular area for this aristocratic sport. The ladies attending the meeting matched the spirit of Derby Day by wearing festively decorated hats. The chapter greeted three new members: LucyGrace Garceau, Dana McCarthy and Hali Smalley.
DAR is open to any female, ages 18 or older, who can prove a lineal bloodline from someone who served in the Continental Army or gave aid to the cause of freedom in the American Revolution. Members of DAR actively support historic preservation, promote education and advance patriotic endeavors. For information, call 760.736.0178, or email to rbvdar@gmail.com.

Valley Center Museum Exhibit Recalls Depression Days
The current recession has prompted the Valley Center History Museum to dust off its archives and mount an exhibit on the Great Depression of the 1930's, with a focus on a major Depression-era activity in the community.
The display, which will run through the summer months, featues photos, documents and memorabilia from a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp which opened in 1933 on Cole Grade Road. The CCC was created by President Roosevelt as a work relief program to combat massive unemployment among young men. Persons housed in CCC camps worked on conservation and reforestation programs, planted trees, helped build roads and trails, and fought fires.
As many as 400 young men were housed in 20 barracks at the Valley Center location. They were paid $1 per day, and worked on projects in Valley Center, Pauma Valley and Palomar Mountain. The population of the area at the time was about 1,000. Only six of the original barracks still stand, having been used in recent years as a fire station by the California Department of Forestry. The CDF moved in 2006 and the buildings have been vacant.
The museum at 29200 Cole Grade Road is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 4pm. Admission is free. For more information, visit ww.valleycenterhistory.org, or call 760.749.2993.

This award-winning adult documentary is a sober story about the unforeseen consequences of unchecked development. A massive real estate project in Austin, Texas, on 4,000 acres of pristine hill country threatens a fragile limestone aquifer and a naturally spring-fed swimming hole, and the community fights back. In the conflict that ensues, there is a struggle that is playing out in communities across the country today.
