Neighborhood Block Yard Sale this Saturday

The neighborhood in Escondido known as CALM - which borders Cedar, Ash, Lincoln, and Mission Streets - will hold a large yard sale on Saturday, June 6, from 8am until 12Noon. Funds from the sales will be used for workshops and neighborhood block parties. For additional information, call Patty at 760.746.3424.

Students to Audition at Next CCC Band Concert

On Sunday, June 7, at 2pm, the Coastal Communities Concert (CCC) Band concert will be held at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center on Balour Dr., Encinitas. The band will be featuring 38 area high school students for part of the concert, and several of these students are auditioning for scholarships that the band presents every year. A new scholarship has been added in the name of the beloved director, Don Caneva, who passed away last year. Whelan Lake Bird Walk Reminder

Join the Buena Vista Audubon Society members for a Whelan Lake bird walk, always on the first Saturday of the month at 8am. This bird sanctuary, not usually open to the public, and has a freshwater lake and riparian edge habitat. Directions: I-5 to Hwy. 76; turn left at Douglas and continue to the light at North River Road. Turn left and meet at cul-de-sac by entrance gate. The leader is John Haddock; 760.941.7824.

Chamber Orchestra Music Concert Announced

The recently formed Poway Community Symphonette, with Ulli Reiner as conductor, will perform a program of music for string orchestra, on Sunday, June 7, at 4pm in the Lutheran Church of the Incarnation, 16888 Espola Road, Poway. The concert is free. Donations to defray costs will be graciously accepted. The Symphonette is the chamber orchestra of the Poway Community Symphony Orchestra which is organized through the Poway Adult School. Information can be found at www.powaysymphony.org.

RB Chorale Presents Scholarships; Announces Celebration

At the recent Anniversary concert, the Rancho Bernardo (RB) Chorale presented scholarships towards college expenses in the amount of $2,500 each to Luke Walton (La Costa High) and Margaret Zhou (Westview High). In addition, Mark Teplitsky (Torrey Pines High), Sara Frondoni (La Costa High), and Joshua Hoh (Poway High) received awards, which were based in part upon audience vote at the May 8 and 9 sell-out performances.

The Chorale is extending an invitation to the public to attend its 35th Anniversary Gala and Silent Auction "Denim and Diamonds" on Friday, June 26, at 7pm. It will be held at the Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club, 14050 Carmel Ridge Road, San Diego, and will feature an evening of dining and dancing, and most likely some impromptu singing. Dress in your classiest denim and diamonds (real or not). Tickets are $25/person in advance. RSVP by June 5. A silent auction will benefit the Chorale's Scholarship Fund. Since its founding in 1974, the Chorale has presented nearly $300,000 to local high school students with the dream of pursuing a musical education.

Escondido Democrats Get the Latest on Marriage Equality


The June meeting of the Escondido Democratic Club will deal with Marriage Equality, with a presentation on the current status of same-sex marriage in California, following the state Supreme Court ruling on the constitutionality of Proposition 8, as well as the situation across the nation. The meeting will feature an activist with Marriage Equality USA and a local civil rights attorney who will discuss the legal strategies being used on both sides of the same-sex marriage issue.

The meeting is scheduled from 7 to 9pm, Thursday, June 11 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave., Escondido. Admission is free and open to the public. Free parking is available on site. Escondido Chamber Announces Two Events

On Wednesday, June 10, at 7:30am, Good Morning Escondido will present Wendi Brick with "Making Great Impressions," Separating Yourself From The Competition. From the Technical Assistance Research Program, it has been shown that 96% of the customers with problems will never tell you -- instead, they will take their business elsewhere. The event will be at the Chamber building, 720 North Broadway. Chamber members price is $5; non-members $10. A continental breakfast will be served.

Then on Friday, June 12, the Chamber cordially invites you to "A Yankee Doodle Dandy" evening, the 99th Annual Awards and Installation Dinner starting at 6pm at Harrah's Resort and Casino. Music by Solid Gold Entertainment, no-host bar, dinner at 7pm with awards and presentations at 8pm, and dancing to follow.

Superintendent of School District to Speak at LSM Democratic Club


The June meeting of the Lake San Marcos Democratic Club will take place on Saturday, June 13, at 1pm, with social time at 12:30pm. The featured speaker will be Kevin Holt, Superintendent of the San Marcos Unified School District. He will discuss the current educational challenges in the areas of academics, as well as funding. The meeting will be held at a new location - not at the usual venue. Hearing Loss Meeting Announced

The Hearing Loss Association will meet at 10am on Saturday, June 13, in the auditorium of the Escondido Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Avenue. A representative from Carol Rae's Education Division of the Escondido Fire Department will be the guest speaker. There will be refreshments and a drawing for two prizes. June Events for the California Coastal Rose Society

The work days at Magee Park Rose Garden will be Saturdays, June 13 and 27, from 9am to 11am, for general maintenance and 'dead-heading' of the roses. The Rose Garden is at the s/w corner of Magee Park, corner of Beech and Garfield, Carlsbad. The garden is tended as a community service activity and a place to teach others techniques for pruning, planting and caring for their roses. The monthly meeting of the Rose Society is on the third Tuesday of the month, June 16, at 7pm, at Heritage Hall, 2650 Garfield, Carlsbad, located in the n/w corner of Magee Park. It will feature Jeri and Clay Jennings who are dedicated to preserving Old Garden Roses that are in danger of extinction. Their talk will be "So you think you want to be a Rose Rustler?" Prior to that, from 6:15 to 6:45pm at the Magee Rose Garden, Dr. Joel Ross will continue his rose-aholics lecture series with a talk on sexual propagation of roses.

Bus Trip Planned to Getty Center

The Singles Fellowship is sponsoring a bus trip to the Getty Center on Saturday, June 20, leaving the First Methodist Church, 341 So. Kalmia St., Escondido, at 9am and returning approximately 6:30pm. The trip is open to the public. Cost is $35, and includes bus transportation, driver's tip, snacks, and water. Bring or buy your own lunch. LSM to Hold "Salute to Our Heroes" Golf Event

Saturday, June 27, with a shotgun start at 1pm, is the date and time for a "Salute to Our Heroes" Golf Tournament at the Lake San Marcos Country Club. The event is supported by management of the LSM Resort & Country Club and LSM Kiwanis; and organized by the LSM CC Men's and Women's Golf Clubs. Military members will join with club members and community volunteers for lunch. All the day's military participants and their spouses/guests will be joining members and guests for an evening of dinner, entertainment, and presentation of prizes and awards to the Military players only.

Cost is $120/member or $150/non-member. Entry fee includes buffet lunch, beer, soda, water during play. Dinner to follow for member and spouse/guest, non-member and spouse/guest; and Military player and spouse/guest. Extra dinners are $35/each. Funds raised are used for the Injured Marine Semper If Fund (IMSFF) to defray costs for families of the wounded Marines coming here from distant parts of the country, and to aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of our heroes. Rancho Bernardo Art Association Venues for June

Members of the Rancho Bernardo Art Association who will be showing their artwork during June are Marilyn Link. Her art will be at the Incredible Cafe, 11828 Rancho Bernardo Road. Cafe hours are 6:30am through dinner everyday.

Michael Snitslaar's artwork will be at the Pacific Trust Bank, 16536 Bernardo Center Drive. Hours are 9am to 6pm, Mon-Thur; 9-7 on Fri; and 9-4 on Sat.

The Rancho Bernardo Community Tennis Club, 18402 W. Bernardo Dr., (next to Joslyn Senior Center) is where Vita Sorrentino will showcase her art. Hours are 7:30am to 10:30pm, Mon-Friday.

If you like artwork, enjoy working with other artists, and would like to show your art, the Rancho Bernardo Art Association is a hub where artists share ideas and their art.
