STEM: Science,Technology, Engineering and Math
By Senator Mark Wyland
Alongside career-technical education (CTE) programs, engaging science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is another key component to keeping rebuilding our economy and addressing the 30% dropout rate. However, STEM fields are facing a workforce shortage and our education system isn’t producing the next generation of experts in these arenas. Fortunately, there are steps we can take to help stop this dilemma.
It’s time we rework STEM curriculum so lessons include a heavy emphasis on experiments and hands-on learning to keep students interested in STEM fields. We can also retain students by providing financial assistance for those who major in a STEM field and agree to teach in our public schools.
I know that with more interactive STEM curriculum, we can keep our kids in school and ensure a successful future for more students, and look forward to being a leader in the process to revise our content guide and curriculum.
Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
