National Day of Prayer Observance Scheduled
In partnership with the Escondido Clergy Association, Interfaith Community Services will host an Interfaith Observance of the National Day of Prayer today, Thursday May 7, at Escondido City Hall at 6pm. For more information, contact Mary Ferro at 760.489.6380, Ext. 266.
Local leaders from a variety of faiths including Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Baha'i, and Native American Traditional Faiths will also be present and share prayers from their respective faith tradition for the nation.
“On our National Day of Prayer, then, we join together as people of many faiths to petition God to show us His mercy and His love, to heal our weariness and uphold our hope, that we might live ever mindful of His justice and thankful for His blessing,” Reagan remarked in a White House speech in 1982.
CWONC May Meeting Scheduled
The next meeting of the GFWC Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC), a local women's volunteer and social club, will be on Monday, May 11, at 6pm. The speaker at the April meeting was guest Susan Lawson, Captain of Soldiers’ Angels, a group dedicated to helping active duty military personnel in different ways, including “Adopt A Soldier” which CWONC participates in by sending letters and gift packages to its adopted soldiers overseas. Friends and Newcomers Meeting Announced
Vista Friends and Newcomers extend an invitation for you to join them on Thursday, May 14, at 9:30am, for the monthly coffee meeting. Monthly meetings are held at the Arcadia Place Retirement Home, 1080 Arcadia Avenue, Vista. Tom Morrow, author and columnist for the North County Times will be the featured speaker. Members of Vista Friends & Newcomers welcome newly retired ladies or those newcomers to the north county area who may be looking for an inexpensive way to meet people. There is always a full monthly calendar, with dinners out, lunches, playing bunco, bridge, mahjongg, a crafts group, etc. There is also a book club and sharing of many views, many laughs, and a wonderful time with some great, friendly women.
Fiesta Auction to be Held by Business Women's Association
The Soaring Eagles Chapter of the American Business Women's Association will hold a fundraiser on Sunday, May 17, from 4 to 8pm, at Cocina del Charro Restaurant in Restaurant Row, 1020 W. San Marcos Blvd., San Marcos.
This event will allow the chapter to continue the tradition of making education attainable for local students in need, for women needing education to re-enter the job market, and members seeking to improve their business skills. In recent years, those benefiting from fundraising efforts have included applicants from St. Clare's Home, Mary's House for foster children, Women's Resource Center, and Valley High School.
For the fundraiser to be successful, your help is needed. You can participate by sponsorship support for the event, which will include recognition of your business in event promotions and signage; donation of a gift certificate or product for the auction; or a donation of money or services to assist in underwriting costs of the event. Your donation will benefit the local community; scholarships are given to local residents with family ties in North County.
The local Soaring Eagles Chapter was formed over ten years ago and is an award winning Best Practices chapter with over 60 members. It is a part of the national organization of American Business Women's Association that was founded 60 years ago for the purpose of promoting personal and professional growth, as well as networking and educational opportunities for business women.
You can make a difference -- and this is a unique opportunity for you to help others achieve their dreams. Sponsorship levels are $750; $500; $250; and $100. Tickets are available for $45/person and includes complete dinner buffet and beverages. There is a $10 discount if purchased by Thursday, May 7. Spring Concert Scheduled by CCC Band
On Sunday, May 17, the award-winning Coastal Communities Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Robert Fleming, will hold their Spring Concert, starting at 2:30pm at the Carlsbad Community Church, corner of Jefferson and Pine, Carlsbad. General Admission is $15; Seniors (60+) and Students is $12.
The band will share the stage with Dr. Robert Spring, "one of the country's most sensitive and talented clarinetists" according to the Arizona Republic. Dr. Spring, professor of music in clarinet at the Arizona State University is known for flawless technique "ultra fast" articulation and circular breathing showcased in musical selections such as the "Flight of the Bumblebee," "Perpetual Motion," and Artie Shaw's jazzy classic "Concerto for Clarinet."

That’s the topic at the May meeting of the American Association of University Women, Escondido-San Marcos Branch on Saturday, May 10th at the Escondido Country Club. Jan Mushinsky, from Mira Costa College, will address this issue.

Orfila Vineyards Is Venue for Chamber's Mixer
Orfila Vineyards, in the lush San Pasqual Valley of Escondido, will host the May Business After 5 Mixer of the Escondido Chamber of Commerce. Vinz Wine Bar, Escondido Disposal and The Phoenix Building will join them as co-sponsors. The early evening networking event will be held on Thursday, May 14, from 5 to 7pm. Senior Anglers Meeting Announced
The Senior Anglers of Escondido will be holding their monthly general meeting on Friday, May 15, at 9:30am, at the Joslyn Senior Center in Escondido at 210 Park Avenue. Two rangers from Lake Cuyamaca, Michael Noonan and Charles Taylor, will give a brief history of the Lake and surrounding area, and about the new changes at the campground.

Sunset Poets To Feature Los Angeles Poet at Meeting
On Sunday, May 17, at 3pm, the Sunset Poets will return to the newly reopened Flying Bridge Restaurant, 1105 No. Coast Highway, Oceanside. They will feature a special reading by Los Angeles poet Brendan Constantine from his new book "Letters to Guns." An open mic reading will follow.
Rancho Bernardo Art Association Announces Venues for Member Artists
Members of the Rancho Bernardo Art Association showing their artwork during the month of May are as follows:
Temare's artwork will be at the Incredible Cafe during May. Location is 11828 Rancho Bernardo Rd. Cafe hours are 6:30am to 3pm.
Karen Vincent will be showing at the Pacific Trust Bank at 16536 Bernardo Center Drive. Bank hours are 9am to 6pm M-Th; 9-7 on F, and 9-4 on Sat.
Dick Johnson's work will be at the Rancho Bernardo Community Tennis Club, 18402 W. Bernardo Drive, next to the Joslyn Senior Center. Hours to view pictures are 7:30am to 10:30pm, M-F.
If you like artwork and would like to find others with the same interests, the Rancho Bernardo Art Association is a hub where artists share ideas, along with their art. In addition, members have critique nights and award shows, there are live demonstrations from professional artists, and demonstrations of different kinds of medium such as watercolor, oil, acrylic, or pencil. Why God Made Moms

Why did God make mothers?
1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.
How did God make mothers?
1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.
3. God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.
What ingredients are mothers made of?
1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.
Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom?
1. We're related.
2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me.
What kind of little girl was your mom?
1. My Mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.
2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.
3. They say she used to be nice.
What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?
1. His last name.
2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?
3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?
Why did your mom marry your dad?
1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my Mom eats a lot.
2. She got too old to do anything else with him.
3. My grandma says that Mom didn't have her thinking cap on.
Who's the boss at your house?
1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's such a goof ball.
2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed.
3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than Dad.
What's the difference between moms & dads?
1. Moms work at work and work at home and dads just go to work at work.
2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.
3. Dads are taller & stronger, but moms have all the real power 'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend's.
4. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine.
What does your mom do in her spare time?
1. Mothers don't do spare time.
2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.
What would it take to make your mom perfect?
1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.
2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.
If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be?
1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.
2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me.
3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.
