Capitol Report April 23rd, 2009

Sen. Wyland

California's Class System
By Senator Mark Wyland

In all my years as a leader on Career Technical Education (CTE), it's now more than ever that we must address the thousands of kids dropping-out of school everyday and focus on restoring CTE in California schools.

The 30% drop-out rate applies to a variety of students who simply drift through school; the fault of an education system that prepares kids for only one option: college. Essentially we're telling students that if they don't enjoy academic work, they don't have much value to society. To the people who make our world operate everyday-highly skilled people who manufacture, deliver, install what we need, society says they aren't quite as good. We have a classification system.

We must restore CTE, and we're not going to get there without bold overhaul. It's our job as a society to engage all of our children in our education system, and CTE is a great start.

Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Sen. Garrick

Bring Business Back to California
By Assemblyman Martin Garrick

On April 24th, I will be joining several of my Republican colleagues on a fact-finding trip to the State of Nevada. During our stay, we will be holding a town-hall style meeting with Nevada’s elected officials, business groups, and former California companies who moved out of our state to do business in Nevada.

All of us have heard the story of companies who have moved due to California’s burdensome regulations, taxes, and environmental law. However, we have not yet had a chance to fully investigate the specific reasons why they left. More importantly, we will gain an insight on what Nevada is doing right in hopes of implementing those policies in California. Hopefully, this trip will give us vital information on how this state has gone wrong and what the best course of action is for bringing businesses, jobs, and a more prosperous economy back to California.

Assemblyman Martin Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista, and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
