Headin’ Home
Late word was received today as we preparing this week’s edition of The Paper for the presses that long time client and good friend of The Paper, Bob Allen, died. Bob owned Allen Brothers Mortuary, with locations in San Marcos and Vista. He’s been here since 1964 and built a reputation not only for his business but himself, personally, as a class act. We’ll have more complete details in next week’s issue. Arrangements were still pending when we learned of his passing.
I also lost my best friend, Carl Reynolds, this past Saturday. A pal with whom I had attended high school, and with whom I had shared many happy memories, as young men, as young marrieds, and, more recently, as older and, sometimes, wiser, friends.
Losing my best friend hit me pretty hard but then an old and dear friend, Alan Skuba, former Mayor of Escondido, and former owner of the radio station (KOWN) that I had managed for seven years, put it all in perspective: “Lyle,” he says, “at our age we’re all rounding third and heading home.”
Good thought. I liked it so much I told him he should consider it stolen.
Bob Allen and Carl Reynolds. Two classy guys who rounded third and made it all the way home. RIP, guys. Ya done good!
