Key Club Chartered at Escondido Charter High School

With much fanfare and a special event, a great program was held recently when 37 students were inducted as charter members into the newly organized Key Club at the Escondido Charter High School. After much hard work and determination, Esther Chen saw her vision become a reality. She said she was anxious to start school at Charter so she could join a Key Club, however, when she got there she found out there was not a Key Club, so she persevered and made it a reality. She found a wonderful teacher, Lori Soule, that would take on the extra responsibility to be the Faculty Advisor for the Club.

Induction was held by John Crawford, Key Club Coordinator from the California-Nevada-Hawaii District, and Steven Kamen, Lt. Governor for Key Club, Division 37 South. Charter members inducted were Esther Chen, President; Amelia Morley, Vice President; David Swain, Secretary; Sarah Huffman, Treasurer; and Laurel Conger, Editor. In addition, new officers sworn in were Missy Glassett, Incoming Vice President; and Jordan Palmer, Incoming Treasurer. Club gifts were presented and introduction of charter members was made by Betty Parker, Lt. Governor, Division 37, Cal-Nev-Ha District of Kiwanis. Also on the program were Lori Soule and Coach Dennis Snyder, Founder/Executive Director, Escondido Charter High School.

The Kiwanis Club of Hidden Valley is the Sponsoring Club, and several members attended. Those involved in the program were; George Lentulo, President; Maurice Weaver, Immediate Past President; Dave Schmitt, District Trustee; Lyle Davis; and Evelyn Madison, Key Club Advisor.

Big plans are being made for nine of the new Key Club members to attend the Cal-Nev-Ha District Key Club Convention this coming weekend in Anaheim, where there will be several thousand young people learning all facets of leadership, community service, and all the programs available to them through Key Club.

Child Development Center Celebrates Opening of New Classrooms

Recently there was an Open House celebrating the opening of two new classrooms for 52 infants and toddlers at the Lincoln facility of the Escondido Community Child Development Center (ECCDC). Bob and Suzy Barnum and their three daughters, were honored for their Barnum Charitable Trust major donation of $100,000 to ECCDC for making this project a reality. They received a City Proclamation by Mayor Lori Pfeiler and a Resolution from Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher. The new classrooms each will have 27 infants and toddlers from age four months to 18 months.

Two other classrooms have toddlers from age 4 months to 18 months, and other classrooms house older toddlers/children at this facility, located at 613 E. Lincoln Avenue. Each room is age appropriate equipped for the students. This has been a long-time goal of Betsy Jones, Director of Development for ECCDC, who says now they are working on and planning for a capital expansion for another 120 children by 2010.
