RB Chorale To Award Musical Scholarships
The RB Chorale, all-volunteer chorale group, announces its annual musical scholarship application period is open to San Diego County high school graduating seniors. Scholarships will be awarded during the Chorale's 35th Anniversary shows, "Oh Say, Can They Sing!" scheduled for May 8 and 9, at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.
For 34 years The Chorale has been giving scholarships and this year awards totaling $10,000 will be given to musically talented students planning to attend a college/university, with music as their major. Any field of musical endeavor is applicable: Voice, String, Wind, Percussion, or other solo instrument.
Information and applications have been sent to Music Departments across the county, and also available at www.rbchorale.org. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than Tuesday, March 10. Candidates will interview and audition on Saturday, March 28. Up to three will be selected to perform and compete on Friday, May 8, and up to three on Saturday, May 9th. Amounts awarded to each finalists following their performance will be determined by audience ballot voting that evening.

CWONC To Host An Evening with Cupid
Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC) is hosting its second wine tasting fundraiser at Vino 100 on Thursday, February 12, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Tickets are $15 per person, to include the tasting of five different wines and appetizers. Gifts will be raffled. Vino 100 is located in the Grand Plaza mall located at 133 S. Las Posas Road, San Marcos. The proceeds of this event will go directly to CWONC to help fund its projects involving Casa de Amparo, a residence in North County for children who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Escondido Senior Anglers to Hold Special Youth Fishing Day
In cooperation with the City of Escondido and the YMCA, the Senior Anglers of Escondido will be hosting a group of boys and girls from the YMCA at a special outing at Dixon Lake on Saturday, February 21. Heading up the committee from the Anglers is David Gherke who reported that the youth will be spending two hours fishing and two hours hiking at Daley Ranch. The morning will end with lunch served by the Anglers. This is the second year the club has sponsored this activity. In the event of rain, the event will be postponed to March 6th.
"Native Plant Propagation" is Program at Audubon Meeting
When the Buena Vista Native Plant Club meets on Sunday, February 15, the program will be the potting up cuttings of native plants for transplanting in the garden later in the Spring. Art League to Feature Tom Tiedeman
The Lake San Marcos Art League will feature noted artist Tom Tiedeman as the demonstrator for their meeting on Monday, February 16. His demo will be in watercolor. He currently has workshops and classes at his Escondido Gallery. The meeting will be from 1:30-3:30pm, at the Recreation Hall, 1105 La Bonita Drive, Lake San Marcos. Guests are welcome. Concert to be Held at Methodist Church
The First United Methodist Church of Escondido will present a concert by pianist Bryan Verhoye on Sunday, February 22, at 3pm in the Sanctuary, 341 So. Kalmia St., Escondido. The concert is open to the public. A free-will offering will be accepted. The concert is co-sponsored by the Musical Merit Foundation of San Diego. The concert will consist of works by Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann. A reception to greet the artist will follow the program. For more information, contact the Church at 760.745.5100.
The artist is a concert pianist who trained at the USC School of Music, the Aspen Music School, and the Peabody Conservatory. He has won first-prize awards from the International Piano Recording Competition and the Carmel Music Society, as well as multiple awards from the Musical Merit Foundation of San Diego. He has been featured numerous times with the San Diego Symphony in both classical and jazz settings, and has many other credits to his name. Besides music, Bryan’s other interests include chess and tennis, and he delights in being husband to Shelly Marie and father to 6-year-old Molleigh Rae.

"It Just Takes One . . ." Fundraising Campaign Starting for Boys & Girls Club
The Boys & Girls Club of Oceanside (BGCO) begins their annual campaign, dubbed "It Just Takes One... The 2009 One Campaign for the BGCO." In 2008, the club raised $70,000 and awarded member scholarships to 350 youth in Oceanside so they could keep attending after school programs that helped them become confident, caring and responsible citizens.
Kickoff of the campaign begins Wednesday, February 18, at Comerica Bank in El Camino Real, Carlsbad. You are invited to join the dedicated and experienced staff of BGCO in raising this year's goal of $100,000. For information, call 760.433.8920, or email bgco@bgcoceanside.org.
Vista to Celebrate Rotary Day Honoring It's 104th Birthday
In celebration of Rotary International's 104th birthday, the Vista Chamber of Commerce and the City of Vista will declare Monday, February 23, as "Rotary Day in Vista." The celebration will be from 5 to 7pm, at the Vista Entertainment Center's upstairs event room. The Vista and Shadowridge Vista Rotary Clubs will honor representatives of organizations the two clubs have contributed to over the years in Vista, show photos and memorabilia collected by members. City officials will be present along with Mayor Morris Vance who will present the clubs with a Rotary Day Proclamation. The local Rotary District Governor is scheduled to attend. Woman's Club to Host District Fine Art Festival
The Woman's Club of Escondido will be hosting the California Federation of Woman's Clubs, Palomar District #24, Fine Art Festival on Tuesday, February 24, from 9am to 2pm. New Officers Installed for Daughters of Union Veterans
State President, Janet Uribe, installed new officers for 2009 at the January meeting of Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865, Nancy Hanks Lincoln Tent No. 5. Those installed include President Susan Zimmer; Sr. Vice President Darlene Magdalayo; Jr. Vice President Barbara Ibaibarriaga; Secretary Louise Jefferis; Treasurer Joan Largey; Chaplain Barbara Mondt; and Patriotic Instructor Marilyn Steber. Two new members inducted were Dorothy Traver of Oceanside and Susan Van Horn of Carlsbad.
The next meeting of this club will be at 11am on Tuesday, February 24, in the Veterans War Memorial Building, Zoo Drive and Park Boulevard in Balboa Park, San Diego. The program on "Mary Todd Lincoln" will be presented by Susan Zimmer. For information, call 619.222.6493.
Art Association Artists Showings Announced
The following artists, members of the Rancho Bernardo Art Association, will be showing their works during the month of February at the following locations: Marlene Levitt, at the Incredible Cafe', 11828 Rancho Bernardo Road. Cafe' hours are 6:30am to 3pm. Janet Perkin showing will be at the Pacific Trust Bank, 16536 Bernardo Center Drive. Bank hours are 9am to 6pm M-Th; 9-7 on F, and 9-4 Saturdays. Nate Polinsky's works will be at the Rancho Bernardo Community Tennis Club, 18402 W. Bernardo Road.
If you like to do artwork and would like to show your art, the Rancho Bernardo Art Association would like to have you join them. They also have live demonstrations from professional artists with different kinds of medium such as watercolor, oil, acrylic, or pencil. Single membership is $20; couples $25; students $10. Sorority Chapter Entertained by Sister Chapter
The Xi Chi Nu Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority was recently entertained by a sister chapter, Gamma Rho Master, at a Chinese New Year's party. Chinese decorations and a Chinese buffet topped the evening, along with some fun games. Each year the chapters entertain a different sister chapter, ensuring that members get to know each other better. The evening was a success, with members of Xi Chi Nu winning the prizes.

Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher to Speak at Republican Club
On Monday, February 16, Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher will be the speaker at The Escondido Republican Club meeting, at Cocina del Charro Restaurant, 525 No. Quince, Escondido. Social starts at 11:30am. Fletcher will give a report on the state's budget. He has stated that his focus will be ". . . improving and streamlining the way government functions, creating an environment that fosters job growth, and work to tackle the long term problems California faces . . ." Senior Anglers To Meet
The Senior Anglers will hold their monthly meeting at 9:30am, on Friday, February 20, in the auditorium of the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Avenue, Escondido. Featured speaker will be Mitchell Perdue, Senior Biologist with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest, San Diego. He has spent 30 years diving and exploring the coastal waters off Southern California and Baja.
