Here we go again! The Gamma Rho Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority is again sponsoring a bus trip to Los Angeles. The trip is scheduled for Wednesday, February 25, and will go to the Dr. Phil show for two tapings, then to Farmer's Market for lunch, and on to "The Price Is Right" show before returning home that evening. The bus will leave Escondido between 5-5:30am, and return approximately 7:30-8pm. Donuts/sweet rolls and coffee will be furnished on the trip to LA; lunch will be on your own; and snacks with soda and water will be furnished on the trip home.

Cost is $25/person. If interested, please call Evelyn at 760.746.1649 for reservations, which will be made on a first-come, first-served basis until the bus is filled, then a stand-by list will be maintained. Additional studio details will be given when you call for reservations.

Tour Scheduled at a 1925-Era Villa In Valley Center

A 1925-era villa in Valley Center - for many years the most expensive residential property in San Diego County - will be open for public tours on Sunday, February 15, from 2 to 4pm, sponsored by the Valley Center Historical Society.

The mansion was built by British nobleman Lord Sommerville, and was surrounded by a 640-acre vineyard. Lord Sommerville called his VC estate Melrose Ranch, after Scotland's Melrose Abbey, and he proceeded to build guest houses, servants quarters, and formal gardens.

The country estate was described as the "showplace of Southern California" and the site was later selected for a Warner Bros. movie set in the French countryside. The villa gained notoriety as the secret rendezvous for the scandalous 1933 royal romance of Edward, Prince of Wales, who courted the American divorcee, Mrs. Wallis Simpson. He later became King Edward VIII, but abdicated to marry Mrs. Simpson.

Tickets, at $25/person, will benefit the VC History Museum's endowment fund, and are available at the museum, 29200 Cole Grade Road. For ticket information, call 760.749.2993. A wine and cheese reception is included at the villa. The estate, still known as Melrose Ranch, was acquired in 1997 by a local businessman who has restored much of the property and planted new vineyards.

Scholarship Applications Requested by Republican Women Federated

Charlotte Mousel Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors who demonstrate their ability to think constructively on matters affecting our government. The local Republican Women Federated clubs participate, and the area is determined by your address. To apply and be considered for a scholarship, check with your scholarship counselor at your high school.

For Escondido residents, you are sponsored by the Escondido Republican Women Federated Club, and you need to check with your Escondido high school for details. Then submit a typewritten essay, not to exceed 1,000 words, with your thoughts on the topic "Why is the U.S. Constitution unique in human history, and why should each U.S. citizen value its contents?" The essay, your academic transcript, a senior photo, references, and other pertinent information should be sent to Ardie Burrows, 1118 Pinecrest Ave., Escondido, 92025. Deadline is February 23rd. For other information, call her at 745.3542.

The Escondido club awards scholarships in the amounts of $1,000 (first place) and $500 (second place). These are based on scholastic achievement, school activities, community involvement, political activities, general appearance of the application, and constructive thought demonstrated in an essay.

The winners then have the chance to compete on the County level for scholarships in the amounts of $1,000 (first) and $500 (second). Winners from there go on to the Southern Division where the scholarship awards are $1,200 (first) and $800 (second). You will be contacted immediately if you are a winner, and checks will be awarded in June.
