The Editor

Godspeed, Mr. President

Dear Editor: This week I was late getting around to opening up your "timeless newspaper" for my usual line-to-line reading. Tears of joy came to my eyes with your half page dedication to our new President, Barack Obama. I had thought that my emotional joy had been spent the day before while watching the Inaugural Day events.

I grew up with segregation and discrimination in southern Kentucky. Luckily for me I left after high school in 1953 when a government recruiter came to the area. I tested and qualified as a civil servant clerk-typist (manual typewriter).

Our Department of Defense Naval offices were already integrated. But, once outside the doors, the District of Columbia was segregated, even People's Drug Store! Colored people had to stand in a special line at the food counters and take out their food.

Even today, I never tire of seeing beautiful ceremonies and parades in our our nation's capitol and here in San Diego County. My pride swells when seeing pictures or viewing television of our beautiful symbols, the White House, the Capitol Building, the Washington Monument with it's reflection pool, Mount Vernon, and other historical places.

It is icing on the cake for me as I continue to view your fantastic picture and read your personal contribution, "Godspeed, Mr. President." Thank you so much for "The Paper" and your articles about our historical past events.

Bike Race Brings National Attention to Escondido

On Feb. 22, George Washington's birthday, Escondido will be the center of worldwide news. We will be the finish of the Amgen Tour of California world-class, nine-day bicycle race a la the Tour de France.

We will be the finish line for a star-studded field of cyclists, including Lance Armstrong. Crowds upwards of 40,000 people are expected to make Escondido the city of choice to witness this phenomenal event.

What has been understated is that this was all made possible through the efforts of the San Diego County Convention and Visitors Bureau's Cami Mattson. Cami has been working for Escondido and North County for more than 25 years and this is by far her greatest accomplishment. Kudos, Cami, for an outstanding job.

What is incumbent on the business community now is to capitalize on this event and participate in capturing the economic benefits that this type of event will generate for Escondido. There has never been an event of this stature to put Escondido in the world spotlight and I look forward to being there. I hope you will also be there.

Letters to the Editor are always welcome.

Please limit your submission to 250 words. As always, we reserve the right to edit for length, content, and good taste.

We prefer submittals via email. Please send to: thepaper@cox.net but will accept faxed copies and regular mail. We will, however, screech mightily if and when we receive them because, being lazy, we don’t like to have to retype Letters to the Editor or Press Releases. With email it’s a lot quicker and easier to edit.

If you have an item for The Social Butterfly, you can email that to: TheSocialButterfly@cox.net

Readers are expected to comport themselves at all times as ladies and gentlemen. See as how that’s all that reads The Paper, that should be easy.

We require your name, address, and phone number so we can verify the letter. We will not, however, publish your address or phone number.

Fax to:
760.741.7800

Regular mail to:
3643 Grand Avenue, Suite B
