International Students Begin College Life at Mesa College

Recently, 69 international students received a warm welcome at Mesa College, and have begun their studies for this semester. The students came from Oman, Kazakhstan, Australia, Brazil, Korea, and other countries across the globe, and received an introduction to college life and daily life in the US and San Diego.

Twenty-two students, 31 percent of those arriving, came from two countries - Brazil, 12, and Korea, 10. The other 47 students came from 24 other countries, including 5 from Vietnam and 5 from Taiwan.

Each year, Mesa College welcomes more than 100 international students representing dozens of countries. All incoming students are required to attend a three-day orientation session which acquaints students with required immigration assessments, academic requirements, application processing and registration. Students are also introduced to student support services and resources available at Mesa, one of San Diego and the nation’s largest community colleges. They also learn daily life skills, such as how to get auto insurance, bus routes, finding a place to live, and money matters.

“At first, the students are quiet and wide-eyed,” says International Student Admissions Supervisor Ivonne Alvarez, “but by the third day of orientation, they are confident and relaxed, comfortable among new friends, and eager to begin their studies.” The college has a dedicated counselor for international students, and an International Student Club to offer support and camaraderie.

Spring classes begin at Mesa College on January 26. For more information on the Mesa College program for International Students, call 619.388.2717. For general registration information, log on to www.sdmesa.edu.
